Many Serbians, weary of Austrian domination were struggling for independence. One of them, an articulate and intelligent student called Gavrilo Princip (odd name!) shot the Austrian Arch-Duke (was he the actual Austrian Kaiser? - I don't know). I've read Princip's very well reasoned and expressed statement to the police after his arrest.
The existing system of international alliances clicked into action and Germany invaded France a little too eagerly, due to their arrogant little Kaiser, Wilhelm who wanted glory and had a bone to pick with the frogs anyway. He lived in luxury to a ripe old age after the war in a palace in Holland, the little swine.

History books record that World War I started when the nations went to war to avenge the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, the heir to the Habsburg throne, on June 28, 1914 in the Bosnian city of Sarajevo.

As a result of the assassination, Austria-Hungary issued an ultimatium to Serbia placing the blame at their doorstep. Serbia unable to meet the demands appealed to Russia for help.

World War II had a lot of underlying causes, but the tip-off point for it was when Germany invaded Poland against the orders of other European nations ( mainly France, Great Britain) and so they all declared war on Germany. Before that, Adolf Hitler had been conquering other countries in succession(Czechoslovakia, Austria-Hungary), and every time GB and France called him on it he promised to stop, but as we all know Hitler is a big fat liar, and he didn't stop. The line was drawn at Poland, and Hitler crossed it, so they had to take him down. The other Axis powers (bad guys) involved in WWII were Italy and Japan. Russia was with them at first, but they eventually switched to our side. They had an alliance with Germany, so when GB, France, etc. declared war on Germany, that meant that Italy and Japan had an obligation to help Germany fight. Axis Leaders Russia=Josef Stalin Germany=Adolf Hitler Italy=Benito Mussolini Japan=Hideki Tojo Allied Leaders GB=Neville Chamberlain/Winston Churchill France=Charles de Gaulle U.S=FDR, Harry Truman PS-There were a lot more countries involved than just these seven, but I'm only listing the main ones.

Serbia assassinated Archduke ferninand of Austria-hungary. so Sebia was the immediate cause. but germany promised Austria a "blank check" of support in war. Without germany's promise that incident would not have started the war.

Bosnia was not an independent country in 1914, and Yugoslavia did not exist until 1919 (the end of WWI.) Although the apparent "cause" of WWI was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand the heir to Austria-Hungarian Empire and his wife Princess Sophia by Serbian nationalists, financed by and underground Serbian military group called the Black Hand, the actual cause was the division of Europe, during the previous 20 years into two armed camps competing for economic and military dominance combined with the efforts of faltering empires like Austria and Russia to deal with the ethnic and economic stresses of the new century.
Essentially the unification and growth of Germany (1870-1900) has led Great Britain to abandon its policy of isolation, and as had been its historic policy of the last 250 years, to combine with other countries to prevent one country (in this case Germany) from militarily and economically dominating Europe. From 1901-1910, Britain forged a series of alliances and understandings with France, Russia, Italy, Japan. In response Germany feeling "encircled" built alliances with Austria, and Turkey (then the Ottoman empire.) Each side engaged in an arms war (like the cold war between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. in the late 20th c.) The "match" for this powder keg was the assassination mentioned above. Austria was looking for a "quick" war to allow it to end Serb resistance to its occupation of Bosnia sent a series of severe demands to Serbia. The evidence that Austria sought war was that even after Serbia agreed to all of the Austrian demands, the Serbian answer was hidden so that Austria would have an "excuse" to go to war. Russia, the traditional ally of the Slavic peoples of Southern Europe, threatened to invade Austria if Austria invaded Serbia. Austria called on its ally Germany, who promised to back Austria and go to war if Russia invaded Austria. Russia then called on its ally, France, who agreed to invade Germany if Germany attacked Russia. At this point Britain asked all countries to respect the "neutral" countries, especially Belgium whose neutrality was guaranteed by the Treaty of London (1830) France said yes, Germany said no. at the end of August 1914 Austria attacked Serbia, Russia Attacked Austria, Germany Attacked Russia, France attacked Germany (across the Rhine) and Germany, following its Schifflen Plan invaded Belgium as a prelude to attacking France from the North. Britain demanded the withdrawal of troops and when Germany refused, Britain declared war on Germany. So WWI was of and running. There is a very good book covering the opening of WWI called, "The Guns of August,' by Barbara Tuchman. Also here is a good general site :
