I just purchased a set of Logitech Z-5450 wireless computer speaker system, and I'm wondering about using other speaker wires than the ones included in the box. The ones that came with the set, are extremely thin and skinny, and I thought I'd get better signal transfer with proper, thicker speaker wires. However, the instruction manual states that only 20AWG gauge wire can be used, and that any other gauge may damage the speakers/sytem.

How can different gauge speaker wires possibly damage my system? I've swapped the skimpy wires that were packaged with my system, for 16AWG wires, and the speakers sound fine still.

My intent was to further improve the sound quality of these speakers, although I was already quite pleased with the sytem. However, if I know these 16AWG wires can do harm to my system, then I'll definitely remove them ASAP!

"bigger wires wont have any resistance to the sound coming through them, so if they are too big the speakers will sound not as clean."

Complete rubbish.

More rubbish.

You can use whatever gauge of wire that you want, from very thin to very thick, without fear of damage to your 'speakers.

If the wire is of a very heavy gauge you might just possibly hear an improvement in the bass frequencies, but I doubt it very much.

Thinner wire will have a slightly higher resistance and this reduces what is know as the "damping factor" of the amplifier/loudspeaker combination. The result being that bass frequencies are not so well controlled.

But I bet you don't detect any difference whatever wire you use.

Heavy Gauge Speaker Wire

Different size speaker wires will not damage your speakers.

In your case, you won't notice any difference with larger gauge speaker wires. A larger wire lowers the resistance to the current flowing from your receiver or amp. If there is less resistance, then the your speakers will reproduce the sound more accurately. It takes an audiophile quality system to notice changes in sound quality by making small changes in speaker wire size for short cable runs. Longer cables (over 40 ft) need to be a heavier gauge.

P.S. I also agree with the answer above this one. I hadn't read it before I posted this.

no they wont be damaged, dont go to big, probably no more that 3 gauge sizes bigger. bigger wires wont have any resistance to the sound coming through them, so if they are too big the speakers will sound not as clean. too small and not enough power will get to them and also wont sound clean and loud.

No, 16AWG wont hurt the system. In fact, they might improve the sound quality.

Yes they can.
If u use a speaker wire that cannot carry the ammount required by ur speaker ur speakers will blow.

But in ur case no.
