The Mayan Long Count calendar doesn't end in 2012. The 12th Baktun of the LC ends on 12-20-2012, making the first day of the 13th Baktun (13.00.00.00.00) 12-21-2012. (A baktun is 396 years long).
On 12-21-2012, there is a grand astronomical alignment that only happens once every 26,000 years. The sun comes up against the Milky Way, in the area the Mayan thought was the birth canal of the universe (and actually it's quite close to the center of the galaxy). When the sun comes out the birth canal...it's being reborn. It is reborn about every 6500 years but this one is the grand rebirth which starts the whole 26,000 year cycle anew.
Everyone misunderstands and thinks that the world ENDS when the new age begins. That is the exact opposite of what is going on. Energetically, this world already ended. I have heard that it ended as long ago as 1987 or as recently as 1999, but it's definitely over. We're living in an in-between time, waiting to see what will happen.
Read "Maya Cosmogenesis 2012" by John Major Jenkins for a lot more on this subject. Read my 2012 article on my Jaguar Nights blog or my regular website for other information on that day.

Interesting question.
The zeta's say the Mayan got the start date wrong so the earths renewal is earlier then 2012

yes and know to the end of the world,
Yes most life will give way at the pole shift caused by the passage of planet X
This may be 2009 or even before, the last one being at the time of Moses in The Church Bible

No in the fact that some will survive, and the earth renewed into a service to others only planet...no more warrior religions, wars or governments of lies

There are ways to survive the pole shift the Zeta's (zetatalk.com) are here to help all those that have a spirit to know

nothing. there's no significance to it at all...... 2012 is what year it'll be in 6 more years. The Mayans aren't around anymore but their calendar was for their use only.

No significance. The Mayans created the calender and got as far as 2012, then they took a break and forgot to finish it.

It's the end of the calendar.
like any other calendars made by human beings - they all have an end..
and a beginning.
but that doesn't indicate that the world doesn't exist outside of the period beginning-end.
it only shows which period the calendar covers.
that is the significance of 2012.
