Try familysearch.org to find out basic information. It's really helpful to have a rough idea of dates and locations of some family members. If you have Social Security numbers, you can request their Social Security form to find out further information from the govt.

i found ancestry.com helpful, some features are free, i picked the ones to pay 199 a year, got all my info in that year and then cancelled. to me it was worth it. i found birthdates, death dates, social security numbers, marriage dates, divorces, kids, siblings of ancestors i was looking for and could go back to the 1700's in russia

The Mormons have a huge geneology database. But I think they require a fee to use their stuff.

the best thing to do is contact all of your relatives, and ask them, ask all of them, especially the older ones, and find out their ancestry.
