I have a friend in college for Criminal Justice, and he works as a security guard in a mall. He feels that people treat him differently than everyone else that works there, and sometimes he gets made fun of by mall rats and insulted by customers when he asks them to move their illegally parked cars, etc. How come?

I think that people think less of mall security because they fell that they do fight real crimes.

People dont like being told what do do. He's a rent a cop, and has very little authority. He can't arrest nobody, he can only call the real cops to do that. So he is looked at like a dingleberry by some.
Personally, I respect all security guards. Thats a thankless job, and they can use our support. But there is a way of talking to people, and a way not to. Some Security Guards need to learn more "tact".

Speaking as a security OFFICER(not security guard) those people would have a change of tune when they realize that security guards are thte ones out there in the middle of the night in the heat,rain,cold making sure that customers make it to their cars safely so they can make it home to their families.
I worked a grocery store parking lot for 11 years and not once did somebody ever look me in the eye and say,"Hey,thanks for being out here". Beleive me,it would have meant the world to hear that.
Hey,but when the sh** hits the fan,guess who they all come looking for,lol.

Mainly because he in not an Official of the Law just a representative of the Property he is working on. Also some people just have no class or respect for others. If he is polite about asking them to move and they give him grief than he should take the appropriate steps according to the SOP of the Property which is usually to tow the car. That takes care of attitude when they want to get thier vehicle back they will be a littel nicer wanting to know where it is.

People are just ignorant. People say Mall Security have no authority? It's like saying you have no authority in your own house or property? Does that make sense? Security Officers are contracted giving them all rights to represent themselves as the agent of that PRIVATE property. People belittle every job. If it's security, they call them rent a cops or wanna bees or they failed at being cops. If its a cop they call them pigs and all kinds of stuff.

In defense of the older,senior ,retired security officers...some of those old geezers were in the wars,and you might not realize it, but they might be a pretty good shot. Also, they keep it safer for some shoppers to get to their cars. They are another set of eyes. You never know, that security guard could save your granny's life, just because someone was there to get her safely to her car. People that make fun are just trying to make their sad asses look better. (The mall rats probably have an audience.)

Face it, he is a security guard that's why!!!! When people go to the mall, they go to shop and have a good time, not to be harassed by play cops that take their jobs too seriously. Now it's a different story if they are really needed like if someone tries to rob someone or assault, but asking me to move my car or something like that.....get a life is what I would say.

Well if it's any consolation, I am a cop and WE get very little respect. Lot's of people in this group alone talk bad about us. But that's ok, I didn't take the job to further someones opinion of me. I took it because it can be dangerous and doesn't pay very well.....oh no I took it because I believe the world needs more good guys. Tell him not to sweat what others think about him. If someone calling him names or making fun of him bothers him now he'll never make it as an officer.

People who become cops generally aren't smart enough to do much else and a security guard is one step below that. It's good that he is in college, but other people don't see that. They think being a security guard is his career

Security guards in general do not get much respect since they have no real power of arrest any different from any citizen.
Many people see them merely as police "want a be's" or as someone who could not cut it as a police officer
