The name originated in Naples after the local women of easy virtue, Puttana means literally "whore", but the reason why the dish gained such a name is debated.

One possibility is that the name is a reference to the sauce's hot, spicy flavour and smell. Another is that the dish was offered to prospective customers at a low price to entice them into a house of ill repute. The last is the bright vibrate colors of the olives, tomatoes capers & basil match the bright colors of their undergarments....

puttanesca sauce; alla puttanesca

Definition: [poot-tah-NEHS-kah] Generally served with pasta, this sauce is a spicy mélange of tomatoes, onions, capers, black olives, anchovies, oregano and garlic, all cooked together in olive oil. A dish on a menu described as alla puttanesca signals that it's served with this sauce. The name puttanesca is a derivation of puttana, which in Italian means "whore." According to one story, the name purportedly comes from the fact that the intense fragrance of this sauce was like a siren's call to the men who visited such "ladies of pleasure."

The sauce is so-called because it supposedly calls to mind the familiar odor of the "puttana", an Italian lady who, shall we say, "lies down on the job"....LOL

bon appetit!
