I got my Border Collie 2 years ago and have only heard him bark twice, so I know he can bark. I got him from a rescue and was told he had obiedence training. Can a dog be trained to never bark? Any suggestions on how to get him to bark? I have tried barking at him, sounding like a cat. It just seems sad to me that he never uses his voice.

He is 3 years old now, no medical reason he can't bark. As I said, I know he can because I have heard him twice and also when he is sleeping and dreaming he makes those little dream barks.

It is possible to train your dog to bark and not to bark. If you want your dog to bark for protection reasons there is something you can do to make him bark. It is too long to write here what you need to do, but I will be happy to help you train your dog to bark if you would like.

Borders do not bark until they are older. You do know that dogs can be de-barked but they can make a little chirpy sound. I would say that he is either de-barked or does not bark. He could be late maturing. Never heard of that. Interersting. You might want to talk to a local trainer or vet and/or check out some books in the Library. Do some research.
Hope this helps.

Does your border collie have a job? Does it do flyball, agility, herding, conformation, fetching a frisbee, anything? These dogs become neurotic if they are required to live in a typical urban home. Does he bite you when you are running? Barking and nipping are very typical in herding breeds. Borders need more than just a "walk" They need to be out RUNNING for a couple of hours a day. Take some obedience classes, and make sure he gets enough exercise.

Most collies bark their brains out. I bred standard collies years ago. One way to get him to bark ... try having someone come to the door and bang loudly, while you inside make a fuss and get the dog excited and if he barks, which he will eventually, give lots of positive reinforcement. Worked for me with a smoothe collie who would never let me know if someone was at the door. Good luck.

I also have a border collie...didn't bark for the first 6 months of his life. Now he does (he's 4)...and no barking sounds like heaven! How old was he when you adopted him? Possibly he had his barker removed from a previous owner.

All dogs are different. Your dog may be shy, or just not want to bark. My dog only barks when he senses danger. He never barks at other dogs, or at me. He'll use his voice when he wants to, and, no, a dog can't be trained not to bark, because it's their nature to bark (it's the way they communicate) so it would be hard to make them stop completely. Your dog is probably just the serene, calm type. who doesn't like to or want to bark.

I'm not understanding why you want to train your dog to bark. Usually that is a less than desirable trait in most dogs. A Border Collie is one of the smartest breeds around and more than likely it has been well trained. If you want to teach it to bark on command, you can try to do that. My dog whispers, sings, and barks on command, and has a mute button. Good training is worth its weight in gold.

You are so lucky. My BC who is only 1 barks at people other dogs the birds flying overhead, and other dogs who are barking a couple blocks away.
A friend of mine has a lab who doesn't bark either. I can not imagine never once barking? What if you are playing fetch or frisbee and withhold it from him?
Mine will even bark at his soccer ball until someone moves it

My dog had the same problem all you have to do rough him up a little and make him start growling and what he doesn't like he will start barking at it. Just say for example my lab didn't bark I put two socks on each hand and slapped her around and now when she see socks she try to attack them
