It is only through those of us who reject materialism and cling to the true beauty life has to offer to stand up and shout to others who share our understanding that people will come to realize that all the 'things' will not bring happiness and that real joy comes from understanding our place in the universe and doing our best to make everything we touch better for the experience.

I think, as a society, we have become too materialistic. As I become older, it seems that life points out the reality of how special the simple things are. Last Monday night our family got together, after work, for a simple meal to celebrate Father's Day. There were no presents, just the joy of being together and sharing conversation. There was an announcement of a baby on the way, which gave my husband and I the excitement of a new grandchild. After our meal, everyone grabbed an ice cold piece of watermelon to eat out in the backyard. I watched as my family tossed a baseball, played with the dog and the little ones dug in the garden to plant the seeds from their watermelon. As darkness fell, all the kids were running around the yard trying to catch lighting bugs. As I watched the children I thought how I did this same thing as a child, as my mother did and most likely my grandmother and her mother before her. What beautiful summer memories I cherish as I watch my children and grandchildren play out the simple joy of being alive on a warm summer evening. This is truely what fills my heart with joy. My love of God and the simple pleasures could never be replaced by any materialistic goods of any kind. I would not trade the peace that I feel, on this simple evening, for any amount of money. God has always provided enough to pay the bills, but I am so blessed that he has provided the love that I can share with others. No amount of money can buy the feeling I have on this evening.

Yes we have & it's getting worser & worser every day it's not getting better. I can remember the times we could leave our doors unlocked at night but we can't do that now. With the invention of the TV telephones cell phones & computers. Now people no longer wants to get together & people are even meaner today. Look here on Yahoo Answers & just see how rude & hateful some of the questions & comments are. These things nor can man bring about true lasting peace. However when Jesus does return & he sets up his Kingdom then we'll have everlasting peace.

Good questions. It's hard not to want so much when images, commercials, magazines, movies, pop ups, models and shows that are state-of-the-art almost jump at us from every angle.
That said, those who can rise above it and realize the utterly momentary high these things bring will probably find more lasting peace as the de-clutter and de-toxify their life. In fact, I find a simple day at the park with my wife more rewarding than the expensive productions that yield buyer's remorse and sometimes a lack of intimacy simply because out attention is being yielded elsewhere.
I agree in many ways with what you are saying. That said, maybe I shouldn't keep saving for that plasma t.v. that I want. :)

Peace to whom?
Yes, we probably have become too materialistic expecially when you see how poverty stricken some people are. But on the other hand, if you can afford it, why shouldn't you have it? If you give a reasonable amount to charity and still have money for luxuries, I think you are entitled to them.

Your right, Peace of Mind and Joy come from the simple things in life, such as love, faith, hope, family, hard work. We are a very wealthy, spoiled people and he has mad us prideful and forgetful fo where we came from and who blessed us with all that we have.

of course not! but a lot of people are not willing to expand their minds to bring them peace. it's hard to find peace because a lot of people are used to certain things. it's hard for people to break the break the habit. but i'm glad that people are out there who realizes this fact.

I would answer your question but I'm too busy listening to my iPod, talking on my cell phone, and spending all my money on expensive stuff I don't need.
(I think that answered your question) ;-)
