An HD antenna (with tuner) or digital cable are not the only 2 ways. You can also get HD through DirecTV or Dish Network (and in some areas, Verizon FIOS).

As a long time HD adopter, I can personally recommend staying away from cable, only because their regular standard def channels aren't always all digital like with satellite. In addition, both DirecTV and Dish have alot on the horizon for HD.

To learn more about what's available and where, I recommend reading the AVS Forums. It's by far the most used forum for all things HD.

If you have an HD capable TV set, there are two ways to watch HD programming

1. An HD Antenna - this way you can receive broadcast (a.k.a. off-air) HD channels - ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS, UPN, WB, etc... If your TV has a built-in HD tuner, all you have to do is connect an HD antenna to get broadcast HD. If your TV doesn't have an HD tuner, you can also buy a seperate broadcast tuner box and any electronics store.

2. Digital Cable providers - your cable company also provides HD channels through digital cable service. Cable providers distribute most or all of the channels above plus ESPN, ESPN2, Discovery, TNT, and maybe others. You will need to rent or buy a descrambler to watch HD through digital cable, but you may also have to pay extra for HD service in addition to digital cable service. Some cable companies also use a CableCARD. It's a small card that can be inserted in some TVs that replace the usual cable box.

hope this helps.

to use your old set you will need a HD converter box connected between your antenna and the set, that will allow you to view hdTV
if you have a HDTV then you will need to do nothing to view hdtv
