There is American English and British English. Just like there is
Spanish from Spain and Spanish from Mexico.
Of course someone from England would say we speak American because doesn't sound very logical for them to say we speak English since our English differs a bit from theirs.

It's like any language. There are dialects of it and no one dialect is any more proper than any other spoken form. Written language is more strict but for spoken language one needs to be flexible. I can easily converse with people from England, Australia, or any other area where people speak colloquial English because I have made the effort to learn from people instead of books. It's good to learn from books too though. Good luck mastering the English language as it is a lifetime study.

American is not a language, it's a dialect of English. Englanders speak proper, or "Queen's" English.

Yeah and ask about 2 or 3 people from England and you will learn they don't either. They have their own little language depending on the area they are in. In the U.S. we speak AMERICAN ENGLISH. It is a form of Englsh.

To begin with, we didn't "steal" English, as one reader stated. It started with the pilgrims being the first immigrants and just mushroomed. The one thing I notice is that its easier to understand an American speaking English than it is to understand an English person doing the same.

I suppose that Mexicans, Cubans, Nicaraguans, etc don't speak Spanish.

Yes, we speak English. We just speak one of the many English dialects. Think of Scottish, Welsh, Irish and many other "English" dialects in Great Britain. In the meantime, consider, in our country, English at it is spoken in New York, Alabama, Boston, Houston, Omaha, Arizona or North Dakota. Which one of those is "American?"

people in england make fun of us if we say we speak american...b/c it's not an actual language. we all speak english, we just live in a different country, use different slang, have a different accent, and maybe a few different spellings. people in australia don't speak australian...they speak english as well.
