Its not that hard...just use your left hand to hold the phone, right hand to shift, and when u have to take your right hand off the wheel, simply use your right knee to steer while u engage the clutch with your left foot, then when u shift bring your hand back to the weel, put your foot back on the gas and your good to go. its all very simple....oh and people still buy manuals, mostly in sports cars because its fun to shift when yopu have a high performance car.

Absolutely. Of the last four cars I've purchased, two have been stickshift, and that's in Los Angeles -- I believe fewer manual-transmission cars are sold here each year than in any other part of the United States.

As for your connection between this and cell phone usage: not everyone spends time on their cell phones while driving. You might find driving stickshift while on the phone inconvenient or dangerous; many people (including myself) find driving *at all* while on the phone inconvenient or dangerous.

Along a similar vein, it's worth noting that automatics are quite inexpensive now, so people buy cars with manual transmissions because (a) they're really desperate to save money, or (b) they really enjoy driving. If in the latter category, they're likely not the type to talk on the phone while driving, because they're paying attention -- I fall into this category -- and in the former category, they likely don't have cell phones in the first place.

If you enjoy driving, stickshift is *fun*. You don't have to drive quickly (or dangerously) to enjoy it, either -- for instance, I enjoy heel and toe downshifting when coming off the freeway into a curvy offramp, and shifting without the clutch just for the fun of it. You get better reliability and gas mileage, as well, and many cars (not all*) have better performance with a stick than with an automatic.

*Toyota MR2 Spyder is over a full second slower to 60mph with the paddle-shifter automatic than with the 5-speed manual, while some years of the Chevrolet Corvette are faster to 60mph with the traditional automatic than with the 6-speed manual!

I actually prefer to drive a manual transmission. Better gas mileage and lower cost than the same car with automatic trans, but a little more hassle in stop & go, bumper-to-bumper traffic or areas with steep hills - it's an acquired skill.
I don't normally make calls when driving - that would not change if I drove an automatic trans. I can't argue with a quick "I'm running late" call while at a stoplight, or maybe on the open highway with smooth flowing traffic. While stopped, or when driving on the open road at cruising speed, the shifter and clutch are not in use anyway. But I wouldn't recommend a manual trans. to anyone who wants to be on the phone all the time while driving and is not already experienced. It would be a major inconvenience to the driver and a hazard to the rest of us.

I pitty the fool that buys ANY high performance sports car that DOES NOT have a manual transmission. Automatics in these types of cars are for girls and morons.

Yea, manual transmissions are still being slod and bought, people just shouldn't talk and drive at the same time. Unless they have a handsfree set for their phone.

the two varieties have their reward and drawbacks. I choose handbook with the aid of fact i admire my money. Engines final lots longer those days, and an computerized won't out survive them like they did in previous automobiles. additionally, each and every person laughs at a activities vehicle with an computerized, basically letting you comprehend. significant reward for manuals: they'll final lots longer, in the event that they are pushed wisely. Clutches for a handbook are in user-friendly terms mandatory at uncommon periods and are rather affordable while in comparison with paying to rebuild an computerized. Manuals do no longer lose as lots torque or horsepower as automatics (that's basically truly proper in activities vehicles and pickup automobiles the place capacity truly counts). a proficient driving force can use a handbook to extra clever administration the motor vehicle than is available in an computerized. gain extra clever gas mileage while pushed ideal. reward for Automatics: each and every person cancontinual an computerized. Automatics are particularly much less confusing for the traditional driving force to handle in damaging climate, considering the fact which you could ease into the accelerator with much less threat of wheel spin. Automatics are extra handy in city using. present day automatics are able to extra clever gas financial equipment than older ones have been. are not getting me incorrect, a renowned computerized will final a particularly long term whether it truly is pampered, yet as I mentioned formerly, it won't out survive a renowned engine.

Yes. I just bought one last month. I feel more in control but you're right that it makes talking on the phone harder unless you are cruising on the free ways. I need to learn to use one of those things that go in your ear so you don't have to hold it.
