The maximum weight for most US air carriers is 40lb. Not only is weight a factor but so is the demiensions. One piece must fit under the seat in front of you with out blocking the floor space and the other in the overhead compartment, while not taking up the entire bin. Maximum dimensions for most carry on items is approximately 22"x14"x9 or 45 linear inches. Oversized items can not be stored onboard in one of the closets. Although we dont stand there with scales as you are boarding the flight, if an item is noticably heavy, we can require it be weighed or checked to the destination. Would you want someone's heavy bag coming down above your head?? A lot of people suffer from head injuries and shoulder injuries because people insist on packing the entire house in a carry on.
Each airline may have different limits for carry on weight limits, International carriers allow far less than US. So, check with the respective airline you will be flying, but for the most part, its 40lb.

Depends on the carrier, whether you are flying international or continental and what class of service you are in. It is best to either look at the ticket jacket or look at the web site for the airline that you are flying on. You can also ask your travel agent or call the airline directly. Ir I knew what carrier you were on - I would help you out.
United offers this information on their web site and I think it is pretty standard for the other airlines: For travel worldwide on United, you may carry on one bag and one personal item such as a purse, briefcase, or laptop computer.
A carry-on bag must fit under your seat or in the overhead bin.
Carry-on bag dimensions should not be more than 9" x 14" x 22" (length + width + height) or 45 linear inches (the length, height and width added together).
United may require that a carry-on item travel as checked baggage if the item cannot be safely stowed on a particular flight.
United exempts the following personal items from the one piece limit:
Child safety seats for ticketed children
Assistive devices (e.g. canes, crutches, etc.)
Outer garments (e.g. coats, hats, etc.)
On domestic flights, United will consider a checked baggage item weighing more than 50 pounds as overweight. Any additional charges listed below are collected on a one-way basis.
The following information for overweight baggage applies to flights within the U.S. 50 states and to/from the Caribbean.
Checked baggage weighing over 50 pounds/23 kg will be charged $25 per piece.
These charges are in addition to any charge assessed for additional or oversized baggage.
Baggage weighing more than 100 pounds/45 kg will not be accepted as checked baggage.
International allowance, size and weight rules may vary by destination.

Carry-on I expect is the luggage you carry with you into the plane. Most airlines state that limit as 7kg though this is not enforced strictly. However, if they see you straining with the load, they will ask you to check it in.

In addition to everything else, it can't be so long that it has to go crosswise in the overhead. Check your carrier's website for size & weight limitations.
