Checking accounts are insured by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation). Since they are federally insured, they require a tax identification number for payment to the account holder in case the bank defaults and goes under.

If you must supply a TAX identification number to open an account, then the financial institution also needs to see a government-issued ID to match information on your social security card or tax-identification-report from the Internal Revenue Service.

You can try opening checking accounts online but they are gonna need at least a TAX identification number and your driver's license number to open the account. That information must match or they will close the account.

There is a bank in Las Vegas that you can get numbered bank accounts kind of like a swiss bank account where you don't any ID. But I don't know if you can get a checking account that way. You don't have a government ID from another country, some banks will let you use that.

None. The Patriots Act requires this information from the banks and credit unions.
