This question has been answered pretty well by everyone, the only thing I want to add is contridictory to a statement by TJ N.
the caliber of a bullet is expressed in a fraction of an inch. not in millimeters a .22 caliber bullet is 22/100ths of an inch in diameter, a .50 caliber bullet is 50/100ths of an inch (or if you reduced the fraction its a full 1/2 inch in diameter). Sometimes ammunitions are interchangable with NATO ammuntions IE. Remington .223 = NATO 5.56 mm (its 223/1000ths of an inch measured metricly its 5.56 mm.
the problem with TJ Ns "years of shooting and hunting" experience is that a ".22 caliber bullet" - commonly a squirel/vermin hunting round would be 0.86 inch in diameter.... which wouldn't leave much squirel meat after you hit it with TJ's .22 caliber gun... Which leaves me with more questions about how much of a recoil his .22 caliber gun has? I've fired the .50 caliber Barret Sniper rifle before, as well as the M2 HB .50cal MG. (they both fire the same basic .50 caliber (50/100ths or 1/2 inch round) The M2 has to be mounted on some sort of mount (vehicle or sandbagged Tripod) to fire. The Barret, I've heard of people firing it standing up.... but the only way I could get behind that thing was in the prone, and after about 15 rounds through that thing I had a bruise on my shoulder the size of Texas. I can't imagine what TJ's .22 caliber that's 86/100ths of an inch would do to me....
now the difference between the calibers... obviously is the size (diameter) of the bullet. what's considered High caliber and low caliber? I suppose thats a matter of opinion. Some people say anything above .308 is large caliber, and I tend to agree with that but that doesn't really give an indication of damage caused by a bullet for example a .30 caliber (7.62 mm) fired from a M240B MG would tend to cause greater damage to soft tissue at long ranges(greater than 50 meters) than a .45 caliber fired from a M1911 handgun.
And yes various rifles fire various caliber rounds.

Rifles do have calibers (calibres), meaning the diameter of the bullet.. For instance, 30-06 (.30 inches), 7.62 (millimeters) .303 ( British rifle), .300 Savage, .22, ,.220, etc.
An example of low caliber, .22, .218
High caliber: .45, .38, .358 Magnum
However, it's the weight of the slug as well as the amount of gunpowder in the cartridge that really defines Hi/Low power.
Also consider the 155mm Long Tom, a cannon that is also a rifle (gun) Happy hunting ---> Use a .220 Swift for prarie dogs.

Caliber is the size of the bullet. For instance If shoot a winchester 270 win mag. The caliber is .270 That is millimeters. a 22 long rifle has .220. The Only thing I can think of on your question is High power. High power is for high volocity bullets. I am not certain on what volocity it is considered a high power. Pistols are not high powered. IF you ever get to see a frame by frame video on a bullet hitting a target, You will see that a pistol bullet hits and the skin and muscle go inward. On a high power you will see the same thing only after that you will see ripples moving outward of the hole. Its the shock wave. This shock wave is as destructive as the hole itself. I hope this helps.

The size of the actual slug and the corresponding grain count of gunpowder! During WW2 the Germans used a 9mm parabellium in it's Lugar and it matched a grease gun. The Americans used a 45 caliber Semi automatic pistol and it complemented the Tommy Gun. All slug are measured in caliber and shot is mesured in grain as in shotguns!
