For a 5-year-old (soon to be 6)? the only time I have seen this tradition at a birthday party is at a Quincerra (no idea how to spell that) the 15th birthday of the females in the Mexican tradition, and those parties are almost as far out as weddings (some further).

A money tree just comes off as inappropriate in a lot of situations and I think this would be one of them.

What might work better is to watch as she is opening the gifts (since you are writing down who gave what for thank you cards anyway, right?) and note which ones need to go back to the store. Most stores will take exchanges without a receipt as long as A) they carry the item and B) it is in good condition.

So you end up getting the money without having to upset any of the guests or look unnecessarily greedy.

If I was invented to a party like that, I would not go. I would think that the parent wants money for themselves and not for the child. Maybe when she gets older it would work. You could put on the inventaion things that she really needs. I give my relatives suggestions on things to buy for my daughters' b-day party.

I think most people would think it would be a disappointment to your daughter. The thrill to a 6 year old is getting to open the gift. I think I would pass on the money tree.

Sounds pretty tacky. No way would I bring cash to a 6 year old's birthday party. If you don't want her to get presents, then maybe you should ask the guests not to bring presents. Very tacky

when i was six i remember wanting to have presents not money. i know where you are coming from though. I just feel that on the birthday day your daughter will be happier with presents but later when she is older she might appreciate the money in the bank.

While I understand the thought process, it is appalling and I would not want to just hand over cash.

This is incredibly tacky. Oprah had a whole show on this.

You can do that if you want, it's YOUR daughter.
