By the time the German Army got that far, they were faced with a severe Russian winter & unprepared, they had almost no food supplies & boots that were almost falling off thier feet & causing frostbite...The Germans were in sad shape & easy to stop...The other reason is that Hitler made the single biggest error by splitting his Army & only sending half to fight Russia & the other half to take on the USA...Too small of an Army to split & take on the two biggest & most powerful countries...

In Vom Kreig, the Philosophy of War by Carl Von Clausewitz, published posthumously,it was made theoretically clear that the greatest casualties in a Battle do not occur during main engagement, they occur during the defeated sides effort to organize an orderly retreat.
Te problem the Germans had on there Eastern Front is related,in that they over-ran their suplylines and that combined with the Russian Winter gave the latter time and oppertunity.

They bombed the city and ruined the roads into the city, which affected their advance.
They also underestimated the resolve of the Russian people and started out too late, getting caught in a russian winter.

They didn't count on the harshness of the Russian winters.
It literally stopped them cold. The Russians however, were adapted to them and easily fought the Germans back.

The same reason Napolean couldn't plow into Russia. It's freakin' COLD. It takes serious supplies to keep up a front in the cold than it does under other conditions.

their armies had been worn out by the russian winter, there were some early tactical errors. But most of all: they changed tactics. From a blitzkrieg to a cityfight....

The cold was too much for them, they had ruined much of the roads, and the Russians were very intent on not giving it up....it bore the name of their leader! Have you ever seen the movie "Enemy at the Gates"?
