HIs performance on the Ed Sullivan show was a major break for his career. Check of the Graceland website-it'll answer all your questions. Public validation in the arts changes people's fame status.
(If an artist appears on this show or wins that award, it means they 'must be good' and fuels more interest...that is the meritocracy we live in---i.e. if other people say they're good, they must be good!)
But on a more down to earth note, Elvis really loved music and his community. He wasn't obsessed with fame at the beginning. He wanted make music and he was committed to the art of creating and sharing....people are drawn to that pure, honest, creative energy. We want to be around people who love what they do and we will turn them into Kings of popular culture.
Elvis was an artist. He was pretty humble but he took risks with great conviction and lived in the moment. He didn't concern himself too much with what other people thought. He gave back to his community and his family and he made great music....and sang about universal themes.

but I don't think there's a clear equation here.

Obviously you weren't around in the 50's and 60's. Elvis had a black sound coming from a white body and band. This was totally new and exciting. He had a raw sexuality that pumped his audiences up to a frenzy. America had never seen anything like it since the "bobby-soxers" went crazy for Frank Sinatra.

He wasn't the only one. Buddy Holly was doing the same thing in Texas, Jerry Lee was doing it in Louisianna, and Chuck Berry was crossing racial lines that had NEVER been crossed before.

Every generation thinks that through their own music they have re-invented the wheel. The 60's had hard rock, the 70's had disco, the 80's had Punk and Metal and Hair Bands, the 90's had the garage band sound of Washington and the Rap movement and Hip-Hop revolutionized rythm and blues.

Think back to when you were 15,16,17 years old and all you wanted was to rebel against everything your parents told you. It isn't hard to see that a lot of trends are about shocking your folks and the more they rant, the more devoted you become just to show them you can listen to and be what you want.

By the way, I saw Elvis preform live in the Houston Astrodome in 1969 and 1971 and even though he was pushing forty, he was still one sexy man and he could sing! His range was astounding, not only in pitch, but also in the types of music he chose. His music reflected his innermost feelings (with the exception of the crap he had to do for movies) and you felt touched by him when he sang.

When Elvis was 18 years old, he wanted to give his mother a special birthday present and went into Sun records to record
"That's alright now Mama", which he paid for. The studio liked his sound and the record and signed him to a contract.

He was a sexy, good-looking, very talented White guy who could dance and sing like a soulful Black guy. Combine that in the 1950s when rock & roll had just taken off, and then boom! HUGE success.

And man oh man, could he sing some gospel!!!
