For a serious answer to the cause of the Dark Ages I suggest you find a good history book. The right answer to that question would contain a lot of information and there are history scholars out there with a whole lot to say on the topic. Check your local library or order something from Amazon.com.
Blaming the Dark Ages on Christianity, or any religion in particular, is ludicrous. The Dark Ages were a time of high supersition. People believed alot of crazy things in those days. Check out references to Alchemy or Pagan Rituals. Christians during the Dark Ages were as superstitious as anyone else, but not exceedingly more. In a time ravaged by the Black Plague and where something like 95% of the population were low class [no middle class existed yet] things were bound to be crazy.
Feudalism is probably the biggest contributor to the Dark Ages.
The Roman Empire shortly after the crucifixion of Christ became a Christian empire, and it thrived long afterwards.
The United States was formed by very strict Christian people with the idea of freedom of religion, even if it wasn't Christianity, and the U.S. is the only remaining superpower right now.
The economic and social structure of a civilization is much more responsible for a country's growth or decay. Capitalism is why the USA thrives and Socialism is why the USSR rotted from within.

The Dark Ages arose out of the Christian Church's fear of losing congregation IF people became enlightened. Suppression of enlightenment is why they were called "the dark ages." The churches feared that true knowledge would lead to agnosticism or atheism...they were not that wrong. Look around you today..the same still goes on...Christian sects insist on spreading obvious nonsense that flies in the face of reason. Fundamentalists, Zealots, and Fantatics would return us to the dark ages in a second if they could..they keep trying. Kansas can teach ONLY Creationism in schools! What a load of bullsh*t, all in the name of some god...god d'jour.

The roman empire was against Christianity, because it takes power from the government (that is its purpose). Later the Romans allowed Christianity. This lead to the weakening of Rome. The church took the power that united Rome. This is a good reason for the separation of church and state. The weakening/fall of the roman empire caused chaos and disorder. That is the dark ages cause.

Yes. The Roman Catholic church was directly responsible for that grim era of history. They intentionally destroyed prior wisdom and reversed the trend toward literacy that had preceded, in order to create a stupid and illiterate populace of sheep ready to believe anything the church told them.
Ironically, it was the Arab world that contributed most to the end of that time, because they had saved much of the Greek and Roman literature the Christian hordes succeeded in wiping out elsewhere. It's ironic, because now the Muslim hordes are doing the same thing.

I believe religion did not lead to the dark ages, however, I do believe that religious leaders took advantage of the time when people didnt know better and could not read or write and yearned for something more, and used "god" as a way of controll theese people in a way so they did not realize they were being controlled.
