I have a friend who is a missionary to Brazil. They have a cashew tree in their yard. They eat the fruit and also make juice from the fruit. The center which contains the nut has to be processed correctly or the acid will kill you.

Possibly for this reason:

"Do you know the difference between a chestnut and a cashew? If not, don't roast your nuts on an open fire. The cashew is related to poison oak. Smoke from roasting an unshelled cashew can cause a severe skin reaction."

Cashews are poisonous when raw. It is only when they are roasted they are edible. That is why they cost as much too.

you can only get them off a tree that way. the nut on a cashew is highly toxic and if the nut is not processed correctly, you become toxic and die.
