There are quite a few people who work for UCLA, the Post Office and several other organizations who are not required to have social security numbers, because their employers carry their own reirement fund.. I don't know how that works for paying taxes and opening bank accounts; but. it's true they don't have ssa#'s.

Issuing sa#'s to babies is a fairly recent development (within the last 20-25 years). I think the people who don't have ssa#'s started working for an exempted company before they applied for a card. But, yes, they're perfectly legal. Remember, a social security card was never intended to be a form of identification for anything but retirement. I don't even think it's legal to require that a person produce a social security card as a form of I.D.

No he is lying. You have to have a social security number to get a job, open a bank account, or rent an apartment. Every single baby that is born in the United States is given a social security number. The only people who do not have social security numbers are illegal aliens. If we didn't have to have s.s. numbers how would the government make us pay taxes? How would they know who did and who didn't. Sure, I would love to have no S.S. number because then nobody would know about my bankruptcy! It would be nice, but that is your identity as an American citizen. It is your financial record for your whole life. It is how you may receive social security benefits one day. It has its ups and downs, but mostly downs. I agree, I would love to not have one, but so would a lot of people. It ain't happenin'.............

If you plan to work for anyone ever in your life, yes, you need to have one.

Some people get Tax ID numbers to use for banking purposes, that way they do not have to use a social security number. This is a number that looks like a social security number which is issued by the irs, it's also known as an EIN (Employer Identification Number).

People who have bad credit sometime try to use EIN numbers in place of thier social security number for applications for credit cards to "Mask" thier bad credit, but it does not work since banks are quite aware of EIN's and what the "coding" is to the numbers.

wow!!! Lots of uninformed people here. It is not a requirement to have s.s. number. But without it you cannot file taxes and your parents cannot claim you as dependent on taxes, no job, no bank accounts, no insurance. No school or college, loans. In some states no drivers lisence.

Everyone has to have a social security card. They now provide parents of new borns with the forms to get a ss # as soon as the baby is born.

No. That guy must have used a fake # or he got the account before they started asking for SSNs. Or else he's rich and doesn't have to work, so he's never applied for one. But then, he'd have to pay taxes on the interest, so he'd still need one. Unless he's illegal and rich.

that is impssible and in the first place you have to give you ss # before you open an account at the bank and how does he have money if he has no ss# he cant have a job without one ss#. so the guy has to be lying or he isnt from the us.
