Who invented the Volkswagen Beetle?

Though the origins of the company date back to the 1930s, the design for the car that would become known as the Beetle / "Käfer" date back even further, as a pet project by car designer Ferdinand Porsche (1875–1951). Adolf Hitler's desire that almost anybody should be able to afford a car coincided with this design—although much of this design was inspired by the advanced Tatra cars of Hans Ledwinka.

Intresting side note for all the people that think Hitler was a master car designer.....................Hitler didn't even know how to drive.

Anyways the history of vw is very intersting story, while Hitler did play an important role in getting the car built, he didn't design it. He wanted to make is country a modern, motorized country and needed a car to do what the Ford Model T did for america. Germany was full of high-end car companys, but nothing the common man could afford. So he played the big goverment role and pushed through the idea of a common man's car and made sure it was built, etc, etc, etc
Just read the link, or pick up a copy of Small Wonder written in 1965, it goes into great detail and explains what roles Porsche, Hitler, Nazis, and many more realy did play.

Although Hitler had visions of a "peoples car"(Volkswagen),cheap, basic transport for the masses,it was Dr. Ferdinand Porsche (yes, the same Porsche racing and sports car folks) that designed or invented it.After the war,it was the British who stuck the" beetle" or bug name to the little VW. vwjcook@yahoo.com
