The actual sound of music itself, without lyrics, has only relative meaning. A 1920's big-band piece could evoke thoughts of young romance for the elderly, but would not bring the same emotions for a teenager. The teen could respond positively to Usher, but the middle-aged mom may just be annoyed.

Music can only convey the ideas you've already associated with a particular style or song. And that may be very different for different people.

Again--I'm only talking about music--not the lyrics. Obviously, words convey thoughts.

I believe it depends very much on the song. Certain songs are very light and airy and have little meaning, other than a lovely tune and a beat that's easy to dance to. But many songs have very deep meanings, that we often miss, because we are not in the composer's place, and we did not write the lyrics.

It is most definitally possible to convey ideas through music. Spanish salsa dancing often expresses rich, passion while German music shows hefty merriment.

Lyrics also give the piece meaning. They add a poetic theme to the song that perhaps the tune and beat can not convey alone.

I am a musician. I have played the violin for four years, and have had a general exposure to music since I was a young child. When you play an instrument with other students five days a week, you really realize the depth to music.

Hope that helps!

Music plays a central role in much of our everyday life, and would be sorely missed if it didn't exist. An easy way of finding this out it to imagine watching an action/adventure (such as Star Wars) with out the music. They would loose a tremendous amount of their appeal to the imagination. So yes ideas are conveyed through music.
