Most airlines allow 1 carry on plus a purse/briefcase/laptop bag and 2 checked bags up to 50 pounds each on domestic flights. Some international flights will give you more weight allowance.
Southwest Airlines allows 3 checked bags.

There are several possible correct answers to this question.
It will depend on what country your are flying in, what airline, and what class.
For the most part on any of the major American owned airlines (American, Delta, Northwest...) if you are flying economy you will be allowed the following:
1 carry on bag (40 pound limit) while you can measure it, most of the cute little roll on bags for sale are the legal size.
a choice of a purse, briefcase, or laptop computer
a camera, small amount of reading material, and something to eat
If you are flying business or first class you get to take an extra bag.
Overseas, the limit is MUCH lower!!! The carry on is normally limited to 11 pounds.
Also budget airlines often have a lower limit.
One last thing, if you are flying international, you can take 1 bag of duty free shopping too, as long as it meets the size and weight limit.
As for checked in luggage
American:
two fifty pound bags - economy class
two seventy pound bags and 1 forty pound - business & first classes
Overseas:
sixty pounds total weight, however many airlines are lower

You are allowed 2 total. It's "1 carry on plus one small personal item such as purse, computer bag or briefcase." This also includes a pillow, shopping bag, back back etc. One item must fit under the seat in front of you with out blocking the floor space at your feet. The other must fit in the over head bin. The size must be less than 22" at its longest point or a total of 45" linear or less (adding lenght+width+height) and under 40lb on most domestic US flights. approximately 22"x14"x9"
http://faa.gov/passengers/prepare_fly/baggage/
The maximum size carry-on bag for most airlines is 45 linear inches (the total of the height, width, and depth of the bag). Anything larger should be checked.
No oversize packages or luggage can be stowed onboard.
If in doubt check with the individual airline.

US airlines allow 2 pieces of check-in luggages whatever weight. Other international airlines normally a single check-in luggage up to 25 or 30kg, depending on the airline policy.
You can carry a carry-on luggage into the plane, limit is 7kg, excluding camera, laptop, walkman, ipod, etc. Some airlines do specify the carry-on luggage size as being able to fit in the overhead luggage compartment, otherwise they will have you check it in too. You may have to pay if the combined weight is over their specified limit for check-ins.
Again, different airline has different policy. It will be wise to either check on-line or call the airline for their specifics on this issue.

Please check with the individual airline you are flying. Each one has their own policies as well as those set forth by the FAA. Normally its two, that is FAA policy. But some airlines may be more strict than others.
