im going to get a new computer soon, but i have an old windows ME. i want to upgrade that to windows xp, but i think it would run really slow on my ME, because of old parts and the fact that it only has 19 gb. our old xp fried, and i found what fried in it, but i need to replace that part for it to work. i really dont want to do that, because that part would be impossible to find because my xp is mini sized and everything is smaller. so im just wondering is there any other parts besides memory upgrade that i should do to upgrade my ME. i dont want to spend a lot of money on this, because it wont be my main computer. how much do you think it would cost to upgrade mostly all of my ME's motherboard and memory and ram etc. and to buy a windows xp installation disk?????? plz help

This is a very complicated question. Firstly, I don't recommend you continuing to use ME unless you absolutely have to because Microsoft is no longer going to be offering any kind of support for Millenium Edition after July 1st of 2006...that's this year! (See www.microsoft.com/WindowsMe to get the lowdown.) Also, I strongly recommend using Microsofts' website to get info on upgrading. Unless you already have a computer guru who will do all this work for nothing, this can be an expensive job to do. So, unless it is mandatory that you keep your ME, I would strongly recommend that you upgrade to Windows XP and preferably Pro since it is more flexible and has better security for networking purposes or using WiFi. It is not worth spending money on upgrading a very old computer....3 or more years is a bit too old to continue using as a primary computer. Keep it and use it as a "work station" type computer if you set up a network in your house! You can get new computers now for under $800-1000 that do much more than your current one, and operate much more quickly than if you upgraded your current computer to the max! So, bite the bullet and get a new computer. You can also try getting a used older laptop...these computers almost always have the latest technology because they have to comply with mobile requirements. If it is a graphics-enhanced computer, you can probably also use it as a "desktop" since it will be enhanced significantly. Dell is having a major sale right now...check them out and also try Gateway. Both have online websites. Good Luck!

ME = Millenium Edition
XP is the latest Windows OS

One detail before upgrading ... you have to do a complete system format. Unlike other upgrades where you could just put the disk in and overlay the OS, XP requires a clean slate.

Also, I am not completely certain about this, but I have heard that XP only works on one computer and once you have typed that access code into the computer, that is the only computer it will operate for. I am skeptical about that though, so try one XP disk and go from there.

Windows XP CD can be bought for only $40 these days on http://www.ebay.com or http://www.amazon.com

I would get at least 512MB RAM since you just need to install Windows and make it work. You dont need more than 512 since you dont have that much hard drive memory to scan. Go to http://www.newegg.com or http://www.4allmemory.com and get cheap memory there.

You can probably get a decent speed computer system for about $100. Just make sure you get them as cheap as possible.

junk it , start over, newer tech is so much better and more cost effective than to invest anything in old outdated tech. do yourself a favor, even those $ 200.00 specials would be better. and you dealing with a known value.
