In Colorado there is a law on the books that if you appear to be loitering and have less than $5 in your pocket you are considered a vagrant. There are similar laws in Nevada and Texas. These of course are very old laws that are mostly not enforced because of the amount of homeless or street people. Every once in awhile, however, they are brought out and dusted off to clean up certain areas of certain cities.

Why would it be illegal to have less then 5 dollars in your pocket?
If that was true, the police would be staking out kids buying ice cream from the icecream man. They would sit there and watch them, then jump the little kids and arrest them..
Also, a hobo who is trying to make a living and has 4.99 cents in his wallet would be beaten to death by the cops..
In short, it is fine to have less then 5 dollars in your pocket..

There are still vagrancy laws on the books in some places. However, as alsmith and jousting have pointed out, these laws have largely been repealed. However, some jurisdictions still have the laws, so technically it is illegal. These laws were not repealed by any Supreme Court decision, but most police departments will not enforce them.

Vagrancy laws have been ruled on in higher courts forever, you would have to fit the profile of indigent to even be looked at. Not a big deal in most all cases and no law that's enforced in most areas. That's the smallest fish in the sea, and nobody cares.

It depends on what state you live in, bust most states have a vagrancy law that requires that you have enough money for city bus or cab fare and I.D. The stae of IN. says all you need to have is legel I.D.
