I don't know the answer but I do know they aren't contagious to babies or little kids. My 2 year old still doesn't "catch" a yawn if it is going around the room. The pediatrician said it has something to do with a social cue or an awareness of yawning that kids have to learn. And, as I type.....YAWN!!

Yawning is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. I saw a study on yawning and it showed that cannot be concluded if yawning is contagious or not. It was about 50/50. Being tired and/or bored is why we yawn. And sometimes I just get tired of being bored. Don't you??? (yawn) ;)

I really don't know but it is so weird how that is the case when one person yawns another one watching will be doing it pretty soon too.,
I know a yawn is the brains way of taking in more oxygen and making the chemicals that are needed to fall asleep work inside your brain. But why when one person does it another one will imitate it is beyond me.
