I'm thinking of starting to fly more as opposed to driving or taking the train. Is it more environmentally friendly? What's the MPG of the average aircraft?

It really depends on what you fly. If you're looking at a Cessna 172.. not worth it... the fuel is also higher octane which is worse for the enironment. Don't get me wrong, I love flying.. it's just not overly practical for certain applications.
However, there are some aircraft that are a little more economical depending on how far you plan on flying. There are ultralight aircraft today that are just like 'real' airplanes.. they use car fuel and are relatively economical to use. They'll cruise at 60mph to 120mph depending on what you are looking at.
Some have fully enclosed cabins.. and they look fantastic.. and fly great.
Another options, just for fun.. gliding. My longest flight in a glider is a little over 4 hours... you can travel distances although it's not overly practical to do so... then you have to get back. But, it's a lot of fun.
So, for an average mpg for an airplane... no such thing 'cause every airplane is different. Is it more environmentally friendly... no... some might me better than others.. some might be better and/or worse than cars, again, depeding on what you're driving. It's all in what you get.. where you fly.. how much flying you do.. what type of fuel it uses... etc.
I'd still recommend you take up flying if you're thinking about it.. balls of fun... almost better than sex!

Actually depends on how much serious the airline company is about this. If they are really doing for the sake of advertising themselves - surely No. Moreover many people like me will often think about the immediate and apparent benefit to us - that is cost. So this may not work out. Instead if there are some regulations to insist all the airlines to be eco friendly - as you have mentioned, then it becomes uniform and we have to defnitely bear the cost, considering there won't be huge difference in cost.

All I can say is that the efficiency of a plane engine is definitely better than a car. It needs to generate the power to push the plane into the air. So you draw your conclusion.
