No. I have a seven year old cocker spaniel and since we got him we have taught him a ton of tricks. He learns fast and everything.

You can teach any dog a new trick just as easily as it can learn a new bad habit. You just need to be patient, repetitive, and good natured for when it doesn't turn out until 2 weeks after you started. Never beilieve that saying because it is sooo wrong! LOL

I adopted a rottweiler mutt from a pound about 2 and half years ago - they estimated that she was around 7 or 8 years old...
this dog has learned a great wealth of tricks since I have had her in my life - some of which she taught herself (she opens doors and unlatches her cage, etc).
Old dogs can learn - if they really want to ;)

Nope, a total myth. When I first started clicker training, I played with it with my 13-year old dog and was shocked at how much she picked up. She had a blast, and her favorite trick to show off to people was if I would drop a plastic lid on the floor and she would go paw it. Simple, but she had great time with it.

5 years old is plenty, plenty young enough to start new things with your dog.

I introduced my sister dog into my home....he is 10 years old and I have taught him the rules of my home. He is actually more intelligent than we have ever given him credit for! LOL! Yes, you can teach a dog anything at any age. I have also volunteered at my local animal shelter training dogs for adoption and most dogs are very eager to please humans. *gotta love em*
Good luck!

Definetly. I got my dog from the shelter when he was 5 and he's already learned new tricks. Dogs grow smarter, not stupider

I put an obedience title (which is based on training) on a dog who started at age 9, she was almost 11 when we entered the shows.

It is absolutely untrue. Your dog would love to learn anything you want to teach her, and be happy to be doing something with you.
