I have a 8 and a half month old son, whom I am breastfeeding, and lately he has been really constipated. I have tried everything that his doctor has told me try and nothing seems to be working. Can anyone please help me. I am tired of hearing my son cry and scream when he tries to go. I want some comfort for him. I try and watch everything that I eat. And have kept basically to a high fiber diet. If anyone can help, that would be great. Thank you!!!!!!

I have tried everything you all have suggested, and have been doing so for quite a while. His doctor recomended some of the same things and still nothing. I am about at my wits end on this. It is so frustrating. Well, I gotta go he is crying and miserable. TY ALL!!!!

First, make sure he's getting enough water, since thats the primary cause of constipation.
You can try gently massaging his belly. Also, try mixing prune juice with some rice cereal and feed it to him two or three times a day (or you can put some in a bottle mixed with half water).

Best Constipation Cures

I had the same problem with my son. Try these:

- Add more fruits and vegetables to the diet (no apples or bananas, they actually constipate more)

- Reduce the amount of rice, bread, and pasta that he may eat.

- Give him lots of water to drink.

- Give him a little bit of prune juice and/or Gerber prune baby food bottle. This one works the best (at least in my case)

- To help him poop, raise his legs slightly (knees bent towards his chest) cus sometimes they're too little and don't have the strenght to push it out.

Just be patient. I know how helpless u feel when you see your little one cry (it's heartbreaking).

Good luck!

Gerber make a juice Apple Prune Juice..... put 2 ounces in a bottle with 1 ounce of water.... try that twice a day - if it doesnt work try straight juice without the water.... Pear juice also worked for my daughter in the beginning, until she was a bit older and she outgrew the effect!

You have gotten some very good answers already but here is an oldie....assuming you bottle feed occasionally, try a small amount of Karo syrup in a bottle with the breast milk. That always worked for my kids. Good luck to you and the little guy.

Infants suppositories. They work great! They work on my son in about 15 minutes. You can get them over the counter too. Try Rite-Aid or Walmart. If you can't run out to the store, give the baby a bath in warm water and baking soda. The baking soda stimulates the butt muscles and helps them to push it out. While in the tub, get the legs and bend them up and down to help them push also. Don't be surprised if the kid poops right in the tub.

Have you tried different juices or baby food? Baby food prunes work the best. Since he is getting older maybe you should also cut back on the breast milk. Also, a friend of mine had this same problem with her son. She had to finally resort to syringing him (her ped. recommended this) everyday with warm soapy water and a baby nasal syringe. Sounds weird, but it worked.

Did any of the suggestions work...........I want to know which you tried and if they worked. My first thought was the Karo syrup.......just a little not a teaspoonful. Rubbing his stomach, the juices.....which did you use? And does he feel better?
