We have taken my son to psychologists, they've run tests on him, he's very intelligent. He's 9 years old and his problem is he does not pay attention in class, plays, talks, draws, doesn't want to work. His teachers try to help. He's failing and getting bad grades, but when I take his tests at home, he answers them perfectly. It's really frustrating, because we pay attention to him, try to help, make him study. We really don't know what else to do. Thanks!

make school fun for him!!!!!!i wish my parents did that but i payed a ttention anyway.....well....don't be to harsh on him...the older he gets the more he'll understand school.your probally scaring the hell out of him!!!!!taking him to a phsicooligist or what ever!it scared me..kidding...lets see.he likes to draw....show him that if he didn't listen he wouldn't know the best drawing tips!teach him how to listen his way.when he gets home from school go over with him what he did that day.if he can tell you everything, reward him.if he can't don't punish him but don't reward him.let him practice focus.he probally loses focus around other kids.so let him take test with poeple around...get him used to concentrateing on what hes doing.im in highschool and kidds who are always looking around see what other people are doing get in torble.trust me.don't be strict with him.it might take him a while but still it will work.when he doesn't do something don't yell but tell him.and stop taking him to shrinks!he probally feels dumb.just try.

OMG it is like reading about my own son.
Your son is probably extremely bored and needs more work to keep his mind working. He needs challenging and may find the work they are giving him in class too easy.
We were called into school because of his grades and we asked for him to have extra work to do in the classroom and he began to excel.
His father was just the same.

It is NOTHING you are doing wrong. By the sounds of it, you and your husband are doing everything you can to help him. Just give him a bit more stimulation at school. If the school can't provide this, it may be time to look for a school that will provide the right education at the right level your child needs.

Good luck and be proud of him......... He will be sucessful and make a fortune when he is older!!

LISTEN!!!
My son had this same problem. The family doctor diagnosed him with ADD and put him on meds. Now we finally know he is gifted. He doesn't take meds anymore. He was just bored and wasn't being challenged enough. Everyone will tell you it is just ADD, but before you medicate him have him tested. It is well worth a shot. You can also get a lot more information on how to tell the difference on the web. There are several sites dedicated to gifted children and many even offer ways to tell if they are. Many children are diagnosed with ADD when they are gifted.

give him the attention at home. i am a teacher and the kids in my class who need attention, seem to not get enough from their parents. maybe he needs extra attention than normal. also, rewards really work! you can reward him for a positive note from the teacher. you can also ask the teacher to create a card that when he is working like she wants, he get's a star. then when he gets 20 stars, he gets a priveledge in class or at home.

could he be gifted? i have seen this so much with gifted students. the work is SO easy, they lose interest. maybe he could move to a gifted class where they offer more projects. then he could have more challenges and excel.

As a teacher I have often noticed that lack of attention is diet related. You sound like a thoughtful parent so forgive me if I am telling you what you already know. Sugar, salt and food additives and colourings, as well as processed food affect concentration. Fresh cooked food, carbohydrates, non-fizzy sugar free drinks make a huge difference. I've seen children's behaviour change radically just through a change in diet. Good luck.

but what you didn't say is wether or not he was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder and well if he has that this is the best way I can describe it, being on meds when you have attention deficit disorder is and was in comparrison to the differnce between night and day, other than that I don't have any other suggestions to you other than taking him on guided tours of factories and other low paying jobs and then showing him people who are company CEO's who have the glamourous life and explaining to him what a diffence a good education can make, best of luck to you

We had the same problem with our son, he is now 12 and he is doing alot better, it just takes time and patience (easier said than done) try limiting his t.v. time and limit video games, let him know that he will get more time for them with improved school work...have him read more at home instead of t.v. preferably b4 bedtime, it will help relax him. good luck....Oh yea stay away from the ritalin drugs are the last thing that you want to start him on...one of our sons teachers tried that with us .. just work with him no matter how long it takes.

I am sure that he will be fine. Look for an alternative learning school. If that is not feasible, then maybe you could go to school with him (temporarily) to monitor. You could monitor in such a way that he doesn't know when you're there, and then would need to behave all the time.

Try one of those Sylvan Learning Centers to give him coping skills. They are used to short attention pupils, that is most of their bread and butter. He doesn't have to attend forever, just long enough to get some tips for better retention.
