Two of my three children are in testing now for Celiac Disease. Basically what it is, is an intolerance to gluten and most wheat products. You can still eat these things, but different people react different ways, from mild fatigue to severe abdominal pain and vomiting for no apparent reason. Some people have little or no symptoms. You can get gluten free products at any whole foods or health stores, and some national chain stores are starting to carry whole and organic foods as well. Check out www.celiac.com, there is a lot of background info, and some links to finding gluten free/wheat free foods. As far as eating out, he would just have stay away from foods that potentially have gluten, such as breads, cereals, pastas, pizza, etc...there is a guide to restaurants that serve gluten free food, but unless you travel alot I wouldn't waste the $20, when all you have to do when you walk in the restaurant is ask....Also, be aware that MANY medications have gluten as a filler....check with your pharmacist when he gets prescriptions!!!

My daughter has Celiac Disease, and it's not easy but it's not the end of the world. You have to look at the labels of absolutely everything your little brother eats, and learn that wheat products and gluten can have many different names. For my daughter, licking an envelope will make her sick - gluten is what makes the sticky part. Pre-packaged shredded cheese is off limits, the stuff they use to keep it from clumping together is wheat-based. There are lots of good gluten-free products on the market, and some really dreadfull ones - try to find a support group in your area, and look for info on the 'net, just Google Celiac Disease. As for restaurants, P.F. Changs has a pretty extensive gluten-free (GF) menu, as well as Carraba's. Also, if you're lucky enough to have a Fogo de Chao in your area, they're wonderful but pricey. Symptoms vary from person to person, some people have none at all, and some get sick within minutes of ingesting something they shouldn't have. With my daughter, she's sick almost immediately - bad headache, horrible stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Trust me, she's never tempted to cheat! Good luck, it's a big adjustment for the whold family but it is do-able.

my best friend has celiac disease and her mom has it as well. They have a list of a whole bunch of other names for 'gluten' and have learned basically what they can and can't eat. They seem to have more diarrhea if they eat gluten, not vomiting. They also get really moody!
this site is good http://www.celiac.com/index.html
good luck. Celiac is not an easy diet to stick to- there is gluten in SO many things!

My sister's best friend has celiac disease. She goes to McDonalds with us and can have a burger (just the burger without the bun), the french fries and Sprite. Now she is taking pills so she can have other things like milk, icecream and butter. Since she is over a-lot, she gets very moody, hyper and jumpy (can't seem to stop moving) VERY dark eye circles, and tiredness. Her mom has special cookbooks for her and probably can be purchased at a bookstore or online.

I was diagnosed with Celiac almost two years ago, and let me tell you that its a very hard thing to deal w/. What makes me sick is anything that has any traces of Gluten, wheat & their byproducts. It damages your intestines if you don't follow the diet. Go to www.celiac.com.
