Even on this website, the problem is strikingly apparent. If we are to have any hope for humanity and the Earth, we are going to have to learn to be more tolerant of those we disagree with. Any thoughts on how this might be possible? I am beginning to see Humanism in a new light: Not as something that contradicts faith-based beliefs, but as a necessary practice for EVERYONE to implement into their current belief-systems. I don't think it should replace peoples' beliefs, but compliment them. It seems like the only possible way for mankind to survive and live in some semblance of harmony! Thoughts? Please don't turn this into a rally. I'm looking for genuine contemplation and thoughtful ANSWERS. Thank you.

I am not implying that God must not exist in order for us to live peacefully. I'm saying that, no matter what one believes, he/she must maintain a certain level of respect and concern for everyone else, no matter what he/she believes. It is upsetting that the first answer to my question had to imediately dumb this conversation down.

Peace begins within a person. Conflicts or disagreements are a reality of life. People who agree with what is said or proposed are considered weak. It appears that they have no opinion and reflect the thoughts of other people. The people who disagree are considered'difficult', disagreeable etc. I grew up in the era of children should be seen and not heard. However, I went to a high school which encouraged debating- for a grade. This forced me to think more deeply and present strong arguments for my thoughts.. I cannot agree with certain beliefs- abortion, alternative lifestyles, evolution etc. though I will listen to a presentation on the topics. Some will call my stance bias or prejudice..When a college in South Carolina rejected my application because of my beliefs, I researched them more and discovered a history of racial prejudice. People will be people; and the Tower of Babel was not just a 'good' story. It says a lot.We are diverse human beings and it is important to celebrate differences.

My wife is a christian and I am an aethiest, we have a little girl and even before she was born we talked about how she will be raised. As I have had bad experiences of church and religion I did not want her going from an early age as I believe all faiths inoctrinate children an faith should devlope as she becomes aware of the world and its questions. It is tricky but I think we manage, some would say my wife isn't a true christian because she doesn't regularly attend church at the moment and is pro choice, she doesn't turn her back on others because of their beliefs or sexuality.
Now, if everyone could have a true relationship with god and understand that he/she/they would surely have made humanity from love and be compassionate towards all regardlesss of their choices then things could be better.
the fundamental problem however is that religion/faith is only a scape goat for some, it would be race or sexuality if they had no god. The irony is that they hate and kill in order to defend their creator. As an unbeliever that, to me, stinks of arogance.
Amen

Well, as an American, today is Memorial Day. If I could write a history paper on anything, I would start with when war memorials first started, some of the more important war memorials around the world and the history of the day itself, maybe getting into the unknown soldier memorials and why it is considered such a high honor to guard it 24/7. But that's just me. Find something akin to your interests, something that you wouldn't mind writing a two-page paper for. You could stick with current events, do a brief history on your favourite music/film genre and how it relates to today, find something in your room and write a history on it... anything that piques your interest.

Secular humanism is one answer, but it is also a belief system in some ways. Eclecticism ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eclectics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eclectic )
or the open review of all religions and the personal integration of as many different ones as possible is the best answer.
Due to the evil ethnocentric qualities that have crept into false
Christianity, most christians are taught to believe all other religions are evil, and this is the true biggest problem.

The best part of belief is that it (for those who believe) tends to be a one time action. If you believe you don't have to think, you don't have to question, you don't have to re-evaluate.
Thus, once you develop your beliefs, you can blithely ignore all facts, figures, and truths you subsequently encounter.
Belief simply programs the robot within.
