Thats exactly it. Although you should let the bread soak up the custard for a while first, usually over night.

assuming you have a recipe already, right?

-set oven to temp to preheat
-boil water in a large kettle - you will need in a bit
-ok - you want 'old' dry bread (not sweet)
-add, if you like (we do) seedless raisins
cinnamon etc
-mix the ingredients for custard (milk,egg,sugar,etc)--do NOT pre-cook
--Mix the bread and custard mix together - stir with wooden spoon until all wet
--butter the dish that you are going to use for the bread pudding. Empty the bread pudding mix into the dish
--get a 2/3 inch deep pan that is bigger than the container using for the bread pudding
--put this pan in the oven. Set the bread pudding dish IN the pan (middle)-don't want it to touch edges of pan. POUR boiling water around the dish as high up as you can and at least half way up the dish where you have the bread pudding.

It is a form of 'bain marie'....this is what makes the custard in the pudding.

Serve warm with fresh whipped cream, or ice cream, OR better still a bourban sauce

Enjoy. If you need a recipe, let us know

I butter bread that is beginning to get stale and put it in a greased baking dish. Put some raisins and cinnamon on top. In a bowl I mix milk, an egg , sugar and vanilla together and heat in microwave. Pour over bread and let it soak in for awhile. Put a pan of hot water in preheated oven (350). Put bread/egg mix in oven and bake til nice and brown on top.
