In a nutshell, canker sores are painful ulcers, or open sores, on the inner membranes of the mouth and cheek that can resemble pimples on the tongue. Canker sores are not considered to be contagious and are of uncertain origin.

Anyone can get canker sores, but women people in their teens and 20s get them more often. Canker sores may run in families, but they aren't contagious. Doctors don't know what causes canker sores, but they may be triggered by stress, poor nutrition, food allergies and menstrual periods
Now if you are talking about cold sores, that is a different story. Those are caused by a strain of the herpes simplex and are HIGHLY contagious, both orally and sexually.

No, they're not contagious at all. Now, Cold Sores on the other hand are a different matter.
I get canker sores a lot - and found out after many years that chocolate caused my canker sores. As long as I don't eat chocolate, I never get sores.

I don't think canker sores are contagious, but cold sores are (they are a form of herpes).
I thought canker sores were caused by other things--I also seem to get them when I eat acidic foods.

Ditto on the non-contagious info but if you want to be completely assured, talk to your doctor. I took an antibiotic (doxycycline) for a different issue completely and it actually cleared up my canker sores... my doctor didn't know why it would but you should ask yours to see what he/she thinks.
