The toaster has a timer on it that you set by telling it what kind of food it is.. Then when you put the food in the toaster it cooks it until the timer stops and that's when it pops up and is ready for you to eat :)

It's a timer mechanism, but relies on heat. The toaster heats a metal coil which pulls away as it heats and expands, eventually releasing something that turns off the heat. When you adjust the dial, you are really tightening or loosening the coil, to make it more or less sensitive.
