Yes, I cut myself to release stress, frustration, and other things I can't deal with any other way. Whatever people say, it works. But it also has some unfortunate consequences. For example, I'm working in New York this summer, where it's currently close to 90˚F (or it was during the day anyway), so the whole wearing long sleeves every day thing isn't so much fun. And I'll be in real trouble when I'm in Mexico later this summer and want to be able to go swimming with my family, who don't know I cut (and aren't going to). There's also the potential for infection and the likelyhood of scars. That, and bandaids are really f***ing expensive. But probably the biggest problem is that it's addictive. When I first started cutting, I could have stopped any time I wanted to (or at least, I felt like I could). Three years later, I've tried to stop and failed. I can sometimes even go a couple months without cutting. So the bottom line is don't start, and if you already have, get out while you can.
Instead of hurting yourself, try taking whatever it is you'd use to hurt yourself (especially if you cut yourself), and apply it to cardboard instead. If your particular form of self-harm involves bleeding, try drawing on your skin in red pen or marker. I've also heard that snapping a rubber band against your wrist can help, but I found I just wanted it to hurt worse and I just made me want to cut more.
You're right that you need someone to help you. You should talk to a doctor (personally, I've thought about going to the campus health center several times, but have yet to work up the nerve to actually do it), or if you're in your teens, a parent, teacher or other trusted adult, or if you're older, a close friend. I know it's hard to ask for help (believe me, I've spend three years not being able to make myself do it), and if you want someone to talk to in the mean time you're welcome to email me at emilyrose1986@yahoo.com.

I am a cutter, have been for about 10 years..... i can go several months without it, but within a year of quitting i usually end up doign it again. It is hard, and i had to go to lots of therapy, take lots of meds, and once even had to go into treatment for it. It is sad that acutally a lot of people have this problem, and it is hard to overcome, but you have to use a lot of self disciple and find other ways to release your pain. You should try to find a doctor and a councellor, but i can also suggest other things such as journaling, drawing, or sports to release those intense feelings you have to get out. There are some immidiate things you can do as well.... like using a red marker to draw on yourself instead, or using an ice cube in place of a cutting device. I found that wearing a rubber band around my wrist and snapping it when i get frusterated can help the immidiate urges. But, i reiterate, you should talk to a councelor and/or doctor about it.

You should find other ways to express your stress. Excersing is good (running till your heart hurts) or (swimming until your out of breath). I find painting really helps to express myself or just plain coloring, or doodling.
Lying could be a way of protecting yourself or others. It could just be your defense mechanism because you don't tell people no or set limits with yourself or others. But needless to say you should find a counselor to talk to, because these problems will only escalate. What will happen when you grow up and have kids? Wife problems or mortgage problems? Get a hold of this now before it ruins your life. Your body can only take so much abuse.
If you can't afford a counselor, try your local county or state health dept. and they can refer you to somebody free in mental health.

i used to cut on and off for 2 years. right now i haven't cut in 9 months. but i found out something that helps. take the iteam you usually use and tell one of your friends to keep it and then take all the sharp stuff out of your room and place them in a room there is always people in. then instead of hurting your self call one of your friends or another thing that helps is to hold a ice cube in your hand for a while b/c it will do the same but without really hurting yourself. you should also see a therapist. i've been seeing them since i was 5 and i hate it but it helps talking to someone you trust.

You need to go see a counselor or therapist that may be able to give you some medication that could help you.

I used to be a compulsive liar and I used to also hurt myself some. Then I found Jesus. I'm not being rude here. He can set you free.
