i think i've developed an obession with my cat and everyone starting to notice it now - even myself. i think about my cat 24/7 whenever i hang out with friends or in school or at work..all the time. i concern about my cat's health more than myself. and whenever i go shopping i always came home with new toys for my cat and completely forgotten what was i trying to buy for myself. what should i do?

thanks for the rudeness, but i do have a boyfriend and i'm not a sex addict so i don't need a vibrator like you do.

I am not sure if there is a problem here. I mean, a big problem. I would say it is rather a small eccentricity, but I guess you are entitled to it.

Perhaps you are a young person and this is your first pet. If you had a puppy or a parrot, maybe it would make no difference. Perhaps you are a lonely person in your heart and you find a kind of solace in the company of your pet. A pet reassures you. A pet never poses you any challenge.

I am confident that with time you will overcome your "obsession". Yes, it is a question of time. However, if you are really worried about it, scared that it may develop further and even come to block your social life, then I would suggest you get another pet, probably a second cat, so that your first cat would have a companion to play and be with, be less dependent on you and you would know that your cat is all right, together with another of the same species, even when you are not around.

Your obvious discomfort with the attention you're giving to your cat suggests a change is needed. My "off-the-cuff" reaction to your discomfort is to say, "Get a life!!" and that may be the best thing said. But then, whether that "discomfort" as I call it, comes from your own observations or from your friends and family who want more of your attention and think you're a bit goofy spending "so much time and money" on your cat is significant here. People used to say I was obsessed with my bicycle racing. Some even said I was "addicted" to it (that was a popular thing to say or "diagnose" back then). But I said to them, YOU obviously don't know bicycle riding like I do, so go waste your time with someone else! All-in-all, maybe we were both right. Just because I rode my bicycle from 250 to 300 miles a week, and went on 100 and 200 mile bicycle rides every now and then didn't give rise for any concern on my part, and just because my entire diet was focused around what gave me better performance on my bicycle rides didn't seem reason for concern. And just because I spent thousands of dollars on buying the bicycle I wanted, and hundreds of dollars afterward updating my bike and my riding gear didn't seem problematic to me. I had the money and the desire, so, WHY NOT??!!!! And, in a way, I still see it that way, long after my bicycle riding days are over. But I also look back and see how different I was compared to my wife and friends, and how I didn't fit in, and I wasn't "going anywhere" with it like Lance Armstrong did, and I put my life on the line, literally, due to a medical problem I developed following a near fatal accident I had in a race one day, and never took care of, and then I begin to wonder. Did I go too far? Should I have tapered it off a bit? Well, maybe. Maybe my wife woulda stayed with me if I had, but I didn't, and she didn't. So, maybe your cat "obsession" isn't really a problem. Or maybe it is. Just give it some thought. And maybe try adding some variety to your life. Maybe you'll do better, and then, maybe you won't. It's up to you. The ball's in your court. God Bless you.

If it is interfering with your life then maybe you should see a doctor... you could have an anxiety disorder or ocd and maybe medication or counseling could help. I don't think a cat is that odd of a subject to get obsessed about. Cats are wonderful pets and many people love their cats very much. If you have an anxiety problem that perhaps you've never noticed before, it's probably natural that your cat was what you started obsessing about, especially if he is your responsibility. Goof luck!

Can you trace back something in the recent past as to why this love for your cat is now an obsession?

Was your pets health in danger, is it old?

Do you feel guilty for some reason about your cat? Being away, is it lonely and you are trying to make up for that by spending money on it?

I do that too! I love my babies. I don't buy them toys all the time anymore b/c now they have too many. It's normal b/c your kitty is like your baby so it's natural to worry. I live in an apartment and I worry that while I'm at work, a unit will catch on fire and my cats will be trapped inside. =^..^=

for now u are probably fine...just dont start doing "intimate" things with your cat and u are okay...are you lacking in the love department? or perhaps the cat gives u attention that u crave inside so u do the same for him? I too am concerned for my dogs, but i do come before them sometimes :)

You are obviously in tune with your cat and can sense it is going through some real serious life changes.

Your kitty needs you at times like these, because it will die soon.
