I live in North Central Jersey and depending on where in North Jersey there are shelters and rescues all over the place here. You will find a lot of Pit Bulls at shelters but you could also try different breed specific rescues. Just a side note: Pit Bulls are very good with children and will protect them in the yard. You just need to train them properly and research and understand the breed.

Surprisingly, Boxers are great with kids.
Go to an animal shelter, there are many mutts out there who are great with kids!

I found my dog on puppyfind.com. You can search different breeds and different geographical areas. Just make sure to check references, as some people listed can be shady.
