Lots of Christians have told me some of the smartest people they have ever met were atheists. Lots of Christians have also told me that they know lots of christians that are hypocrites. It must be true. what do you think?

It depends on which side of the fence you are. Both sides think they are smart.
Christians think that if they share their information with you then you will become one of them
Atheists wonder to what degree that are responsible for giving enlightenment to Christians.

On the hypocrisy business it would all be silly speculation. I know some very honest folks on both sides of that fence.
On the smarts thing, it might be a little different.
It came to my attention about a year back that 80% the folks in the National Academy of Sciences who were involved in biology were atheists. The numbers for Physicists is also very high. Even in the area of science outside of the elite organizations the non-believer rate is well above majority levels.
Now, if you've a mind to, you can decide that scientists are "evil," "misguided," "morally blind," etc. But I think it's a stretch to call them "dumb." As for me, I'm going to conclude that if you threw 100 very brilliant and educated people up in the air, more than 50 would fall on the non-believing side of the fence. And very, very few would fall near the fundamentalist side.
A qualification is in order. Obviously there are scientific luminaries that are deeply religious - and I can name a few for whom I have nothing but admiration. What I have noticed is that in these cases, their concept of God is light years beyond the parodies produced by scriptural literalists, evangelicals and other "athletic" religious types.

I know a lot of Christians and some hypocrites. I also know a few atheists and some are really intelligent and some are very ignorant. You can't generalize and just say that this one thing describes a whole group of people.

At times, many of us can be seen as hypocritical. Actually, almost all humans are hypocritical to one degree or another. The main reason why Christains are known as hypocrites is because the world hates biblical Christianity. See, they uphold us to a high standard of morality, and they should. But once one of us screws up, the whole world is quick to point it out that one of Christ follower's screwed up. Simply put, it's because they hate us.
Most true Christians know that we will blow it because we are, after all, still human. But we also know that when we do blow it, we can turn to Christ for forgiveness and restoration. That's why he allowed himself to be sacrificed for humanity. But really, they should be looking at Christ as the perfect example, not us.
Now to answer your question about the intellegence of atheists, to be honest, it's really only book smarts. True, many of them, as well as many Christians, may be very bright people. However people who generally call themselves atheists are also very avid readers or college graduates who chose to believe the popular notion that there is no God. To the world's standards, they are very smart. To God's standards, and I'm getting this from the bible, they are fools.
Now to answer the one individual who says Christians are afraid of death, the truth is true biblical christians do not fear death. We look forward to the shedding of our mortal and imperfect bodies.
You should know that I currently have no church or denominational affiliation. I'm only giving you what's written in the Bible.

i agree. i guess it seems like christians (and people of other religions) aren't as smart as atheists because their thoughts are clouded by their beliefs. atheists think with a clear state of mind and solely with logic, ethics, and common sense. others think, "well, that can't be true because my god doesn't say that." so their judgement is altered. they can clearly see that something is right, but will think otherwise just because their "god" "says" it's wrong. it all depends on the individual too. different people interpret their religion's teachings differently. you have christians who say that God teaches to love every person. other christians say that God hates gays, blacks, and whoever. now just ask yourself, "how smart can a person be who lives his/her life by a book written by someone as human as them thinking that it was produced by an invisible force who watches over everyone at all times?" but there's plenty of retarded atheists too. look at the guy trying to get "God" out of the pledge of allegiance for example. i wouldn't be surprised if there were even people who claim that they're atheists who don't even know what an atheist is. by the way- this all my opinion.

The Christians follow a bible that contradicts itself many times, and that is hypocrisy a the root of it. Atheists go by fact. So the fact of it is, the atheists are smarter. They are to intelligent to just have faith. Faith in a higher power means that you can not understand science, and the true workings of the world. Atheists don't need faith, because they have the power to think.

Just look at the "pretty one"'s grammer, and she at least proves that Christians are not smart. It is true - general, but true. Athiests need proof that christianity cannot provide. They are analytical and often very intellegent. The vast majority of christians cannot give a straight answer about what they believe and are therefore bound to contradict themselves often.

I've met ignorant atheists and I've met Christians who were not hypocrites. Unfortunately, they prove to be the exceptions, not the norm.

I do think that people who don't believe in religion tend to be more intellegent. I think that everyone's a hypocrite, but Christians have perfected the art.

EVERY BODY IS A HYPOCRITE!
Atheists are not all smart, some are atheists because they are dumb little kids who decide to rebel because they think it is cool.
Christians some are smart, there are christian scientists, doctors etc.
They are probably just more liberal in their beliefs.
