I'm Jewish and my cousin is being Bat-Mitzvahed at a conservative temple. I was planning to wear a black dress that hits the lower calves...the sleeves are short little "fluttery" sheer sleeves. It is a bit low cut. Should I wear a shawl? My tallit?

To the poster who said "I must be reform", uh...NO. I was bat mitzvahed in a conservative temple. And I have worn my tallit to services before. There are many women nowadays who wear theirs.

For Conservative that may border on being appropriate. For Orthodox my general guideline is that elbows and knees be covered (as well as all points in between obviously). With the Conservative, it depends on the congregation.

Hi -- good question. Modesty laws and ress practices vary from community to community and synagogue to synagogue. A dress which hits your calves hould be fine and if the sleeves are at least mid bicep you should be ok. As for neckline, do try and make it high enough to cover your collarbone in teh front, and not plunging int he back either. The dress should cover your shoulders to no shawl is necessary, and skip the tallit.

You might want to ask your cousin's family if there are any additional rules or social norms in their synagogue, or even tell them about the dress. They'll know better than I. Also, ask if the tradition is for women to wer any head covering and if the synagogue provides the lacy doily covers.

Have a good time and mazel tov on the event!

Not sure what you mean by "a bit low cut", but it sounds pretty much okay.
You might call the synagogue staff and ask them.
The Conservative congregations are a bit more formal (I'm Reform, but hold dual membership with a Conservative as well).
So, bring the tallit and wish your cosin mazel tov for me!

Don't wear tallit to a conservative shul. You're obviously reform.
