If tha man calls it of the woman keeps the ring. If the woman calls it off she should return the ring unless it was a combined gift like a Christmas or birthday present.

Why if a women calls off her wedding would she want to keep the ring any ways.

I think it's the done thing since the engagement ring is a symbol of the contract between them to get married. And that's exactly what engagement is, a contract. The ring should be returned as soon as the engagement is called off!

most definitely.

If the wedding is off, that also means that the couple is no more. There are issues that need to be resolved. The rings must be returned. Both people need to evaluate the relationship. If it can be worked out, try the engagement again.

Legally if the engagement is called off the engagement ring has to given back to the man... if he paid for it. You can google engagement ring law and find it but just by watching Judge Judy and the others this is the law. It has to be returned.

Yes, it should be given back. The wedding ring is the consideration for the mutual promises that were exchanged. Once there is no longer mutuality, the consideration must be returned.

I think the ring should be given back no matter what the reason is for breaking the engagement. His hard-earned cash bought the ring - why should she profit from it?

Only if he breaks off the engagement should you keep the ring. If you broke it off or it was mutual, you should give him the ring back or decide together. My ex fiance had me give the ring back but he was a jerk anyways.
