I know this may seem rude and insensitive, but why do girls continue to get eating disorders (I know the physcological factors about it, so dont preach to me about that) even when they know that many people die from the disorder, and from starvation daily? (It just bugs me because alot of my family in Africa have sparse food and are dying because of it).

if an eating disorder is a medical condition, thats not something anyone can prevent from happening the first time around.

As far as the rest, sad but true, it's about the physique.

When we eat ,we rarelyt hink about the starving families in Africa, America, and Pakistan, etc.
When we purchase items, we rarely think about the small Mom and Pop stores that could benefit from us greatly instead of Wal-mart.

It's all an individual experience. Humanity is usually there in most, just not when things asre so far, far away.

I hope your family finds some peace soon. I'll keep them in my mind during meditation.

oh you have family in Africa ? or are you just saying that in a broad term because you're black ? It doesn't rude and insensitive - it seems uneducated and ignorant. not to be rude or anything. but people's eating disorders HERE have NOTHING to do with starving people in AFRICA or ASIA or even here in America. When it comes to food, you have to GROW IT or MAKE IT or KILL IT and if you can't do those things - you work to get money so you can buy it from people who CAN do those things. IF you can't do that - God Bless you because you will die of starvation irregardless of how much I eat or YOU eat, okay ?

There are several reasons for this disorder, but the root cause is they are not happy with themselves.

There are starving people all over the world (even in USA). I am more mad at restaurants that throw away a lot of food (enough to feed probably half the worlds hungry), just because it wasn't cooked right, or wasn't served in a specific amount of time.

First, I am sorry about your family. Boys suffer from eating disorders as well just not as much. America puts such a high value on being thin (probably because we are the most obese country in the world) that young girls do not have the ability to combat this image.

Society! Look at all the magazines have you ever seen a Playboy with a overweight girl in it, or even Cosmo for that matter. It is a disease & alot of people can over come it once they get help. i do believe that peer pressure is an issue also, all through my high school years if you weren't skinny or athletic you were laughed at & some people do take it very serious & that's when it all begins, I myself figured screw you not every woman looks like Barbie & every man looks like Ken. If we all looked the same wouldn't this world be boring!!!!!

These girl continue to do this because they are insecuity about themself, they don't feel pretty,or someone has neg. them so to get attention they use the disorder. Also a love may have pass away so they feel that the this diorder make them fell better about the hole problem. Basic what I am tryin to say is that they hide the emotion, feeling, pain,or what people say and cover it up witn this disorder.

Part of an eating disorder is an inability to judge one's own weight an health correctly.
You might as well ask why deaf people don't just get out of a building when they hear the fire alarm.

For most having a eating disorder is not a choice. It is like any other mental disorder you cant control it despite the facts.

i can understand where you are coming from because you have such a sensitive situation with your family...i think in America it is such a problem because they just want to fit in and be that "perfect" figure like they see in the media and then get wrapped up in the disease without even thinking about what is going on in the rest of the world....sorry about your family members:(

People just want to be skinny and don't care what it takes, even though they may die, they still normally don't know of the other people that can't help to be that way.
