They are both no good. Do not buy food from the supermarkets or the big box stores. Buy from a high quality pet store that sells food that is human grade. Some of the foods would include Innova, Avo, Chicken Soup for the Dog's Soul, Solid Gold, California Natural. The ingredients should be easy to read and not full of "by-products." Your dog will be healthier from having good food.

Here is the ingredient list for purina puppy chow, pedigree's ingredients aren't much different. Truthfully, neither food is good for your dog, this includes IAMS. Things to look for or avoid in a dog food: dry food, no beef flavor, real meat or meat meal (lamb meal, chicken meal, etc.) as 1st ingredient, whole foods (you should be able to pronounce the ingredients), and NO CORN or CORN products, also stay away from yeast.

As mentioned before, Natural Balance, Nutro, Canidae, Nature's Recipe, and Authority's Harvest are all great foods, with the last two being very reasonable in price.

Both are good foods. The key is what is best for YOUR DOG.
Is it a pet? Show? Working?

What I've *used* is Purina puppy chow on many puppies and have never had a problem. I've used Pedigree on adults but haven't used the puppy food - nothing against it.

I raise dogs and the best dog food I have found is Purina. The hard food Dog Chow is good for what I call "grazing" or eating when they want. The best canned food is Alpo. I have never had any bad experiences with either food. Pedigree on the other hand has made my dogs sick. It make them go outside and eat alot of grass for upset stomaches. I hope this helps you decide on a good dog food for your puppy.

I currently have an American Staffordshire Terrier and a 12 y/o Beagle-English Setter mix (rescue). We feed them both Innova Evo. It is 'spensive. BUT my Beagle Setter mix has had less complications/pain with her hips since we changed food and my AmStaff puppy just seems better since the switch. The only thing I would do different if I could con my better half into it is a raw food diet, B.A.R.F.
I have fed all my dogs either Canidae OR Wellness. Both are tremendous dog foods. I had a 20 y/o Chihuahua that I switched to baby food ONLY because she lost all her teeth. But that was only the last year of her life that she got baby food. Baby food was recommended by the vet.

I use Science Diet. If you use a higher end dog food (bought at pet stores) your dog will eat less and will potty less. Not to mention the health. My dog doesn't have bad breath even. Not that I run around smelling it or anything!!! But dogs do get in your face trying to lick!!! My 55lb dog goes thru a 40 pound bag of Science Diet in about 4 months so if you price it out it's actually no more expensive that the stuff you can buy at the store.

It is wonderful that you are wanting to get your puppy off to the best start.

Canidae, Wysong, Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold are all excellent. .... Nutro grows healthy pups, but they need frequent teeth cleaning for some reason. It builds too much tarter.

I have been feedingCanidae for the past 2 years, and my old dogs are younger, my pups have really extra sparkle, and I wouldn't switch.
You can find all of the above at your local pet supply.
Grocery store brands will keep your pup alive, and appearing healthy, but dogs will have health problems as they age, due to lack of quality nutrition when they were young.

You will find that the premium kibbles cost more per bag, but less per month, as there is less waste(poop) and they don't eat as much to stay satisfied and healthy.

Neither is good because it's filled with by-products, corn , fillers. If you want a dog with poor coat, listless, bad breath and always needing to do his business, then go right ahead. Don't feed grocery store brand food because it's only garbage and might not have effect right now, but as times goes by it will catch up with his health. Kibbles n' bits is one of the worst to buy because it's semi-moist and your dog will have bad teeth unless you're always giving him treats/bones or brushing his teeth. There's also an ingredient called Propylene Glycol in it. P.G. is used in windshield washers, deodorants, etc. As years go by, your dog will have a higher chance of being blind.

Read the ingredients. Ask a vet. Personally I feed my dogs Purina Pro Plan Large Breed formula. It works well and is still affordable.

If you must buy a grocery store brand the best is Purina ONE not the regular puppy chow.
