My son is 16 months old but can only say "dada", "that", "doggie", "nan". I am worried that he should be saying more at this age. He will be 17 months next week. What is the average age?

Children progress at all different levels. My daughter talked when she was 4 months old, but my son only had a few words when he was 2 years old. He talks fine now. If you are really worried, ask your pediatrician at your son's next check up, they can put your mind to ease.

My oldest talked pretty young - maybe around a year. My other two (all girls) I thought were never gonna talk and then they both started talking in sentences around age two. They never said many words prior to that and just kinda came out with "I'm hungry Momma" one day and talked up a storm after that.

Talk with your pediatrician, and if they aren't concerned I wouldn't sweat it yet. However, you are the parent and in the best position to know if things are not "right", so if you don't feel your concerns are being taken seriously then get a second opinion. But, don't let the wonder child next door who's doing long division at 18 months be your barometer. Each child is very different and there is a VERY wide range of normal.

A 16 month old child may be only saying one or two words, or may have a vocabulary of over 100 words. *Both* of these are normal.

The average 18 month old says between 5 and 20 words. So your son is right on target. Unless you have other reasons to worry, I would say just love the unique individual he is!!

Also, keep in mind that babies have their own priorities. One child wants to be able to run, so she/he speaks late. Another wants to talk and only takes her/his first step at 18 months. Again, there is a *wide* variety of normal!!

My oldest son started speaking in small sentences at 18 months. Like "that mine", "want juice", hold you mama" and "no want it".
My youngest son is 13 months and he is only saying "dada", "mama" and the "G" sound. I think every child develops differently and that you shouldn't rush them. He will speak when he is ready. Maybe he just doesnt have anything to say yet.

But he is talking already. Those are words!!
Can he sit without support? Can he walk or at least cruise? Can he point out at something? Is he doing eye to eye contact?
go to www.babycenter.com for more information about his age.

My daughter was 3, because of a Cognitive delay. My son was 1, because of a speech delay.
