You also rarely hear your national anthem. We are a country that is proud of every aspect of it. We fought for what we have. We live in a society that teaches us to be proud of where we live and respect where we are from. The flag is a symbol of our freedom. It is way more than just a flag to us. I realize that is something that you may not understand. The stars and stripes of the flag all represent something. The 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies and the 50 stars represent the 50 states. It isn't "just a flag" it is a symbol of who we are and how we got to be that. :)

First of all, it's not the Union Jack; it's the Union Flag. It's only the Union Jack when it's at sea! Us Brits don't 'pledge allegiance to the flag' like our American offspring 'cos we don't honour our flag in that manner. The Union Flag was created during the Battle of Trafalgar, or there abouts, to identify the English (and Welsh), Irish and Scottish ships.
The flag of the United States symbolises:
a) the fifty states (stars)
b) the 13 original colonies (red and white stripes)
c) the republic; the separation and independence from England
d) everything American

why in the USA to the pledge elegance to the flag in the UK we do not pledge elegance to the union jack?
Why do Englishmen say For queen & country?
The American flag is a visable symbol of the spirit of America and all that america stands for. Your Mother, Father, little sister and brother. it is freedom to angerily disagree with out have to cut your head off. it is the way of life all that is precious and worth fighting & even dying for.
50 stars = the states of the union
13 stripes = the original founding colonies.
blue = peace; red= blood shed to win & defend freedom; white=
purity goodness morality.
it is all this & more captured in a powerful & simple blazon called "old Glory"
its so much more than a peice of fabric. if all you see is cloth then you truely have no idea of the meaning of freedom or patriotism.

The pledge is easy to memorize, and pass down to younger Americans.
It is meant as a form of respect to all who have sacrificed for our nation.
The pledge recognizes the flag as a symbol of our nation, it isn't really about the flag, it's about pledging allegiance to the country that it represents. It's sort of a prayer of thanks for the privelege to live as we do.
I'm sure that though you don't pledge allegiance to the Union Jack, there must be some other archaic form of patriotism that you participate in, that Americans do not.

Well we don't use the Union Jack probably because the 'British Empire' doesn't exist anymore, thankfully. The flag just reminds me that our ancestors were idiots who thought they could do what they wanted because they were british and therefore superior. People in the UK are meant to pledge allegiance to the queen, which is just as stupid. We all have flags to be proud of. be it english welsh irish or scottish. The union jack is dead.

I think possibly because America is a relatively new country (compared to Blighty) and they have more sense of what the flag represents.
The Union flag has some bad connotations - BNP, for one - and it doesn't include the Welsh flag. I'm not really sure what it represents, if anything.
Jeeves - I think the people of the Channel Islands would disagree somewhat.

We "Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands...". So we are not pledging allegiance to the flag, but the the country for which it stands. Why don't others pledge allegiance to their countries? Ask them, I don't know. Maybe they just don't care about their country as much as we do.

The American flag just means MORE to Americans because we are a free country, that flag indicates our freedom, freedom from England and being RULED instead of GOVERNED.
Only REAL AMERICANS are proud of the flag and treat it with respect and pledge allegiance to it - and we do that with PRIDE.
There are some people in America who simply put should not be here - they do not respect our views our ways of life and our freedoms, they do not know that having your individual freedom doesn't give you cart blanche to do ANYTHING you want.

The american flag was creatd to display our union against the british at the time of the revolutionary war.
The pledge was made at the time of the signing of the declaration of independance, a pledge the men who signed it made that they would not betray eachother if the revolution was lost.
It was made an icon of victory when we beat the british down. It is now said as a way of stating that we will not betray eachother, and that we will stand together.

That's just how it is in the USA. I did that all through grade school. Yes , it's just a flag, but Americans are taught at a young age to honor the flag and that's our way of showing it.
