How can you tell if someone is asking you out or inviting you somewhere as a joke? For example, someone might invite you to go somewhere but then not show up and laugh it off with his/her friends the next day, or will ask you and laugh in your face and say "It was a joke, I would never go out/somewhere with you". I have always been afraid of something like this happening to me or one of my friends.

Extra details: I don't mean this about my friends; it's mostly about potential new friends and people of the opposite gender, etc. People you want to be friends with but it's awkward at first.

You don't have to be afraid of it happening if you stand your ground. Say it does happen. When you see them next and they say, "It was a joke, I would never do anything with you," just look them in the eye and say something like, "I'm sorry that you have nothing better to do with your time than to pull jokes at someone else's expense, because I certainly do." If you carry an attitude that demands respect, they won't pick on you anymore. And if you start having that attitude now, it isn't going to happen at all.

You can always tell if someone is setting you up for their own amusement. Well if you want to see it any way. Always look for the obvious, if someone that has done things to hurt you in the past has just come up to you and ask you to hang out with them and their friends then hello you will be the butt of their jokes. Stay with the people that you know and trust and remember you can only really depend on on thing your gut.

You need some more self esteem and confidence. And then make some good decisions on whom you may associate with. Yes there are people in the world that do those sorts of things, but simply being "aware" curbs most or all chance of something like that happening. Its a similar situation as walking around with a "Kick Me" sign on your back. Common sense...... (If its allowed it will happen).

Most people are decent. If invited somewhere go.
and anyone that would do that to you is a worthless piece of
shat. Remember that people who do things like that to someone have some marbles missing.

If you are afraid someone is going to do this to you, then you need a whole new set of friends. Friends don't do these kinds of things to people they like.

Its a terrible thing if it happens to you. The good thing is that you will certainly find out if a person is worth being friends with!

this mostly doesn't ever happen, but this is actually normal fear, I bet you are a younger person, mostly if someone ask you to go if they can't make it they will tell you why later or if they ask you and you say yes they will show up.

If it hasn't happened to you sofar, why are you afraid of it? Live life, don't be paranoid. And if it ever happens, so what. Just don't have anything to do with that person again.
