Fat Malabsorption Syndrome (FMS) is where normal fats from foods cannot be broken down or digested and therefore, not absorbed.

Long term efects are fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies (A,D,E, & K). There can be nervous system problems involved as well.

FMS is often treated w/ oral fat-digesting meds, or remedying what is causign the malabsorption (GI damage, Chrohn's, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, vitamin defiiencies, etc.)

In a hospital setting, it is often treated with Medium-Chain Triglyceride Oil. MCTs are directly absorbed into the bloodstream, and do not require digesting or metabolizing. You make salad dressing with it,, drizzle on bread, or stir into hot cereals. It's very expensive and can be done at home as well.

In the hospitals, we've also rubbed corn oil on the pateitns' skin. Many nutrients can be absorbed that way, though not nearly as effectively as digesting them via GI tract. I'ts also very imprecise. But it's better than malnutrition.
