At some point, you will have to transfer the video from your camcorder to a DVD disc. So why not get a DVD recorder (some models available under $100)? Once you have the DVD recorder machine, then transfer the videos to DVD discs. Use the tapes again.

Personally you want to go with more tapes and just keep putting new ones when the old one gets over. There is no good solution to address your requirement and never will be. Each medium has a capacity limit and based upon the convenience level you want, you will find that you will be spending lots of money. DVDs are easier to carry, but costly compared to tapes..

this is tricky. let me get this straight, you're gonna be traveling and you'd like to record the event on video. but, you won't be able to archive the massive amounts of recorded memories onto anything other than the tapes/dvd's themselves? the only thing i can suggest is to weigh it all out. the dvd-ram in their respective camcorders can hold only about 1.4GB of data or 30 minutes of footage. and if you bought, lets say, 10, you're gonna pay roughly 24 bucks for basically five hours of footage. for a little less than that, you can buy 5 DV tapes that hold 60 minutes of footage. either way, if you do a lot of recording, prepare to invest in a lot of tapes/dvd's. otherwise, be conservative with your footage and go with the lesser of two evils.
