Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and store in the frigde. It will eventually start to turn, but this will prolong it longer than any other method I'm aware of.

A head of garlic is what you purchased. You probably used a couple of cloves. Why store it? use it. Garlic has wonderful properties and endless variations for its use in cooking. The posted suggeston about roasting it in the oven is awesome, spread that on a baguette, long french bread, and it's delicious. Rub a chicken with that and either bake or grill and it gives you a whole new taste. Try boiling beans with a head of garlic and some salt. Yummy. Try grinding tomatoes, garlic and salt in a blender, then using the mixture to prepare shredded beef or chicken dishes, or use garlic in small pieces when you cook rice. Check out italian recipes most of them include garlic. Give it a try, it's worth it.

Garlic will last pretty much forever. As for the storing just put it in a plastic bag or somethink to limit the aroma. Cause other food can get ruined by the smell.(Butter, Cheese etc.)

Cut the top of the bulb off, drizzle the remianing bulb in a little olive oil, wrap it on foil and roast it in a hot (400F) oven until the cloves get soft. You can squeeze them out of the skin afterward.
They are good on bread, or you can store the roasted cloves in a jar with olive oil to cover them for use in other recipes.

if you remove the skin, put it in the fridge in a sealed container.
Otherwise, leave it in a basket or unglazed earthenware at room temperature and it will last very long
