Hi -- It is not just old dogs. It is estimated that 19% of dogs suffer from "thunder phobia".

It is believed to be caused by a combination of noise, flash of lightning and change in barometric pressure. Some dogs even have the emotional element of having a bad experience during a storm such as a falling tree or an owners' own anxiety.

It's not just old dogs, the dog could be any age. I have 2 dogs, they are 11 months and 3 years. They are afriad of thunder. I think it's because they don't know what it is. It's a big, loud, scarey nioce to them. Most humans, however, know what thunder is, so it's not really that scarey to us.

It is not that they are affraid of the thunder.Dogs can hear little sounds alot better than humans and as the dog gets older ,the sound such as thunder hurts their ears so when it thunders, dogs will hide or run to avoid the sound and the hurt in the ears.

maybe its a survival instinct. thunder = lightning. lightning = danger.

i think that it is a learned behavior to some degree. I have a dog. the dog was not , in the least bit, scared of thunder. i got a 2nd dog. the 2nd dog was terrified of it. now both dogs are scared. i have observed this with other dogs that i have had too.

I always thought it had something to do with the change in the barometer and the noise of the thunder.

A dog has a keener sense of hearing that a human does. They hear things we don't...They can hear an approaching storm, which explains why my dogs head for cover before I even know there's a storm coming.

Some are and some are not. We had an old bassett hound who could have cared less. He passed on and now we have a young Westie who growls at the first crack and then ignores the rest.
